It Strikes Me
Finn with his visiting partner, Aldo the chihuahua, Reilee Shockley's Therapy Companion
I have noticed that some days when Finn and I arrive for our visit at our usual assisted living site, the is mood is quiet, subdued, and kind of sad.  We start interacting with the residents in the dementia area one by one as they are sitting in their living room area after dinner. As we make our second visiting pass, they don't remember that I sat with them minutes ago, we had a conversation, and they pet Finn and asked me questions about him and fussed over him.

It strikes me that there is something there; something of who they used to be is there. Sometimes I wish I could visit with their families to learn more about them and their lives. I can see that the man who used to be a builder still wants to build and stays busy looking for things that need to be fixed around the room. The lady who did crossword puzzles during her downtime still has her crossword puzzles tucked into her walker. The friendly, gentle lady who is filled with compliments and kind words has always been that way. The funny, sarcastic lady who had numerous dogs throughout her life is still funny and sarcastic and full of truly good advice about dogs.

It strikes me and I realize that they are still the people they used to be and they deserve interaction and respect and love. Even if they don't remember I visited them five minutes ago, something in their mood changes after we visit with them.

As we leave, I notice the energy in the room has changed. I know they know they had visitors that day and I know they are happier. Finn and I are happy, too.

Tanya Williams Sellers & Sandy
Sandy the puggle, affectionately known as a hot dog on popsicle sticks, visits at Chesapeake Care Resources in North East, MD. They started visiting at assisted living, but Sandy much prefers working with adults with disabilities. Together, with her human, Tanya, they make a wonderful team!

Sue Spilecki & Rudy
Although relatively new to PAWS, this team was the first to begin inpatient visiting at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington. (The site would love to have more teams join Sue & Rudy.) This team also attends community events and are favorites at Barnes & Noble, Christiana Mall. What a great team!
