Whether you are strolling the city streets to a late night gig, or on the rush for rehearsal with the Symphony...the Bass Buggie is a necessity for any bassist on the go.

The workshop at Upton Bass has a rotating stock of artists dropping by on a daily basis. Most recently, was our friend Jeff Eyrich who came to see us for some general maintenance and set-up work. While he was here, he told us about his new duo, Alectro.

We've known Jeff since 2006, and there's a lot to love about him and his music. One aspect that stands out to us is that he represents the average working musician. Like so many of us, he works HARD. He has a 9-5, but he plays because he can't NOT play music. Because of this, Jeff's career is a great example of how years of hard work pays off. He has a long and impressive history of collaborations, and even produces under his own label, BePop Records. We are very excited about his newest endeavor and to highlight his new album "School of Desire."

Give Gary or myself a call and let's talk about building a custom bass for you. We love what we do, and we'd love to do it for you!

"School of Desire" Video by Alectro
YouTube.com

Alectro are Jeff Eyrich and Steve Kirkman from New York. They share a mutual love of surf guitars, spaghetti western sounds, spooky desert rock, and weird 1960s Spy-Fi instrumentals. "School of Desire" is their first album as a duo, and their influences are evident throughout. It was recorded in Steve's Octagon studio north of NYC in the beautiful Hudson River Valley - with a wealth of strange-looking guitars, vintage amps, pedals, echoplexes, mics, and analog rhythm machines. Jeff and Steve are your ultimate uber-vintage gear heads, as you'll experience in the video for the album's title track. Click on the photo link above to view "School of Desire" on YouTube.

Jeff began his career as a Los Angeles studio musician and touring sideman. He has played bass and toured with Tim Buckley, Bette Midler, Tanya Tucker, Andy Kim, and Keith Carradine. His studio credits include Air Supply, Rick Springfield, Natalie Cole, John Cale, Joe Ely, Tanya Tucker and the Surf Punks. Jeff has produced more than 30 major label albums, and
he has most recently played bass and produced albums on BePop Records, an indie label he co-founded and manages.

Alectro will be playing in Collinsville, CT on 5/23, and Pawling, NY on 5/27. If you are in the area, you won't want to miss them! More information at Alectro.net...

It's Time for a Check-Up!
UptonBass.com

Owning a bass is a lot like owning a car. Whether we are talking about oil and filter changes or sound post and bridge adjustments, a little bit of maintenance today can save you hundreds or thousands in the future. If you treat it right, your bass last a lifetime. Have you seen the Thomas Hardie, c1825? Your bass has the potential to survive several generations too, and it continues to increase in value and tone with age. How does this happen, you ask?

We highly recommend regular maintenance on basses because we can stop potential issues in their tracks. Too frequently in our workshop we see instruments with simple repairs gone awry or improper maintenance work that leads to full blown restorations. Years worth of neglect or poor-quality repairs will negatively affect the sound and playability of your bass, but the good news is that it's never too late to breathe new life into your instrument. From simple check-ups and regular maintenance, to crack repairs and full blown restorations: the skilled luthiers at Upton Bass will have your instrument looking and sounding its best.

Jeff just had his bass in for a regular check-up and he ended up getting some setup work done to increase the tone and playability of his bass. Unlike some of the big city shops, Upton Bass never charges a bench fee to take a look at your instrument, so what are you waiting for?
