A Round of Applause to Adena Pike Medical Center
for Hosting
May Business After Hours
Chamber members and guests enjoyed an evening filled with hospital
facility tours and health screenings after hearing  Dr. Bill Sever speak
on the latest in robotic surgery available at Adena.

Dr. Bill Sever Achieves Elite Robotics Designation
In just three-and-a-half years, Adena's Robotic Surgery Program has gone from an upstart to being nationally recognized. For more than two years, the program has been one of only eight Case Observation sites in Ohio; hosting surgeons from across the U.S. who come to learn more about robot-assisted surgery techniques from Adena's own Dr. Bill Sever.

Now, Dr. Sever, a general surgeon and Robotics Program lead physician, has taken his role as a proctor to these visiting surgeons a step further. He was recently named an Epicenter of Excellence for Robot-assisted Surgery. The designation comes from Intuitive Surgical, the maker of the daVinciĀ® Surgical System. With this designation, Dr. Sever is one of only 21 general surgery Epicenters of Excellence in the nation; and one of just two in Ohio (the other is located in Warren, Ohio).

"This means Dr. Sever is among the top half of one-percent of all general surgeons using robotics," said Jonathan Conta of Intuitive Surgical.

This achievement is quite impressive for someone who only began his own training for robot-assisted surgery in the summer of 2012. A vocal advocate for Adena to purchase the daVinci surgical robot, prior to the program's start in Oct. 2012, Dr. Sever set high expectations for himself to help make the program a success.

These Americans are fighting to bring
manufacturing jobs back

CNNMoney (New York)

The presidential candidates talk a lot about how they'll bring jobs back and restore the nation's once-mighty manufacturing sector.

Jason Kester has been trying to do that every day for more than three years.

As executive director of the Southern Ohio Port Authority, Kester is charged with spurring economic development in Scioto County, Ohio. The county, which sits just across the Ohio River from Kentucky, was a thriving manufacturing hub decades ago, but its industries and many of its remaining factories are mere shells of their former selves. The area lost thousands of jobs -- and residents -- as companies closed or moved operations overseas. Businesses continue to downsize, leaving Scioto County with a 8.8% unemployment rate.

both of the Southern Ohio Port Authority,

Funding the Next Chapter:
FNB becomes first
major corporate sponsor of library project

First National Bank in Waverly became the first corporate donor
to contribute to The Next Chapter Campaign, donating $250,000
on Tuesday, May 17, to the project which raises funds for the future
construction of a new 19,000 square-foot library facility.

Campaign Manager), Robert K. Mays (FNB President), and Tom
Adkins (Garnet A. Wilson Public Library Executive Director).

On Tuesday afternoon, The Next Chapter Campaign to build "a new, larger, more easily-accessible Waverly library" received a substantial boost when First National Bank (FNB) in Waverly donated $250,000, becoming the first major corporate sponsor of the library project.

"The library has had a long history with First National Bank, and we are very pleased that our first large corporate donation came from them," said Tom Adkins, executive director of the Garnet A. Wilson Public Library. "The library has had its accounts with FNB since it was founded in 1939, and we've always had a strong, close partnership with them. We have received large gifts from individuals and groups of individuals, but this is the first large corporate gift that has been made to the library's capital campaign."

RSI, DOE  employees make improvements
to Waverly park

WAVERLY, Ohio - About 50 Restoration Services, Inc. (RSI) employees and their family members took part in the company's Environmental Day on Saturday, May 7, at Walnut Street Park in Waverly, Ohio.

Those participating beautified the park and made it safer for adults and children alike with a range of activities.  Mulch was added to the bases of large trees, weeds were removed from several play areas, park benches were stained, loose gravel was removed from high-traffic areas and a tree was planted, among other efforts.

RSI is the Environmental Technical Services contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio.

"RSI not only plays a role in the environmental cleanup at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, but also takes seriously its responsibilities as a community business.  We believe we have an obligation to contribute to the area and this is one of the ways we do that," said Greg Wilkett, RSI Program Director at the Portsmouth site.  "I'd like to thank members of our team and representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy who assisted us in this worthwhile cause."

RSI is also a sponsor of the Waverly YMCA, the 2016 SamJam Bluegrass Festival in Piketon this Labor Day weekend and is a contributor to the Jasper Elementary Open House at the beginning of each school year where school supplies and other items are donated to local students.

RSI is an employee-owned, small business headquartered in Oak Ridge, Tenn., with offices in Waverly and Aiken, S.C.  RSI offers services focused on environmental cleanup and beneficial site reuse.

Senate Passes Portman Priority to Fund Cleanup
of Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant

Passed as Part of the Senate's Broader
Energy & Water Appropriations Legislation

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) announced that the Senate has passed new funding for cleanup of the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in May 12, 2016 Energy and Water Appropriations legislation. The funding, which is $40 million more than last year, will help maintain current employment levels for the decontamination and decommissioning work at the Portsmouth Plant. Portman issued the following statement:

"I'm committed to ensuring there are adequate resources for the cleanup work at Portsmouth, and I'm pleased the Senate passed this funding today. The cleanup project in Portsmouth is an important component of economic development in Southern Ohio. I will continue to monitor the Administration's barter of uranium to ensure full funding is delivered for cleanup at Portsmouth, but the Senate's action today is a positive step forward. I will continue to urge the Obama Administration and Secretary Moniz to keep their promises to the Piketon community."

NOTE: Portman secured funding needed to maintain current employment levels for the decontamination and decommissioning work at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in last year's Omnibus bill. Portman has repeatedly called on the Obama Administration to uphold their promises to the Piketon community and to provide adequate funding to avoid layoffs.

SUMMER ARRIVES with
JIMMY BUFFETT PARTY
and PARROTS of the CARIBBEAN
Saturday, June 4

Sugarloaf Mountain will get tropical as Southern Ohioans dig out their island-wear, dust off their leis and grab their shades to party with the number one Jimmy Buffett tribute act in the country, the Parrots of the Caribbean! Summer will officially arrive in Chillicothe with Parrots of the Caribbean on Saturday, June 4 for a 7:00 pm concert. The POTC band performs a high-energy, original stage show featuring a "Salute to Jimmy Buffett". These seasoned professionals perform Buffett's biggest songs, their own original Cajun country-rock hits, along with wild and crazy and sometimes outrageous stage show antics. The band has delighted audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada for over a decade. In 2012 they performed for our Troops in Okinawa Japan.

The five musicians who make up the Parrots of the Caribbean exemplify a wide variety of talent. Dave Albrecht, lead singer began his career impersonating "Elwood Blues," the Dan Akroyd character for a Blues Brothers Band. After traveling with it for five years he joined "Legends in Concert" a top-ranked show of impersonators in Las Vegas. He eventually transitioned to his Jimmy Buffett act gathering the finest seasoned musicians. Jeff "Hawaiian Hillbilly" Cline on lead and rhythm guitar and backup vocals is as diverse in his styles of music as his heritage. With his Polynesian mother and Air Force father he grew up in three states and German. On keyboard, Kenny "Tips" Rice, called "The Professor" brings more than 40 years of professional musical performance. A classically trained pianist, Rice has transitioned to all musical genres and an assortment of groups. He has opened for such artists as Edgar Winter, Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, George Carlin, Michael Bolton and Willie Nelson. Greg Martin on percussion and vocals has been performing for nearly 40 years across the country and abroad. Gary "Riptide" Rigmaiden on bass and back-up vocals hails from the Golf Coast of Louisiana and spent part of his youth in Spain and Brazil. For him the island music, songs of the sea, bayou themes and beachcomber blues of Jimmy Buffet's music are right at home.

"A Parrots of the Caribbean concert is one of the most fun nights you can have anywhere doing anything.   We'll have margaritas, cheeseburgers, beach balls and expect everyone to dress appropriately with tasteless Hawaiian shirts and flip flops.  Let's celebrate the arrival of summer together!" Said Scioto Society CEO, Brandon Smith.

Tickets are $20 for reserved seating in advance and $25 day of show.  Concerts are rain or shine events and all sales are final. There will be no opening act.
Tickets are available now at
or by calling
