Trinity Sunday
Sermon:  Rev. LeeAnn Inman
Scripture:  John 16:12-15

In Matthew, disciples are commissioned to "Go into the world, making disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  In John's, gospel, Jesus prepares his disciples for life without his immediate presence to direct this "great commission."  The promised Spirit will "guide you into all truth."  Will we listen to the Spirit and be open to newer and deeper understandings of our faith and to the implications of Jesus's revelation for us today?  The internet, social media, and the 24 hour news cycle now give us a more immediate awareness of local, national, and global crises that challenge us for a Christian response.  What is the Christian response to such realities?  What response is more true and faithful to Jesus' revelation?  Can we, like John, trust the Spirit to guide us in discerning what it means to live out Christian faith today?

Bishop's Special Offering - May  22

Dear Sisters and Brothers of the Florida Conference,

I am pleased to announce that a grand offering will be collected at the 2016 Florida Annual Conference event during June 16-18. Our theme this year is "Leading Like Jesus" and I invite you to be a part of this special opportunity. This offering will support the clergy and laity of our annual conference with resources for leadership development in three areas:
1.   Grants for innovative forms of "church beyond the walls" through the Fresh Expressions network.
2.   Inspiring and equipping our congregations to see, identify with and reach the neighborhoods around them in evangelistic, prophetic, apostolic, and missional ways.
3.   Training a core group of spiritual guides and mentors to encourage and sustain this work that has already begun.

Our fundamental goal in the stewardship of these resources - both people, our laity and clergy, and money - is that we follow Jesus into the world that he loves and join him in his mission to love, heal, and save the people of Florida. We are discovering that we need new skills and capacities to fulfill this calling.  And, if we are honest, we may need a new heart and a new spirit! Thank you for your support of our efforts to engage the next generation in the mission of God and to develop leaders who have a heart for service and will make a difference in our world.

The peace of the Lord,
Kenneth H. Carter, Jr. , Florida Area Resident Bishop

*Special Offering envelopes will be included in the Peace Connection this Sunday!

New Worship Series Begins - May 29

New Worship Series Features In-depth Look at Hebrews: "The Amazing Faith Race"

We often hear life referred to as a "rat race," as we juggle schedules and priorities and the nagging sense that we are in competition with everybody else on the planet.  But the Scripture casts a different vision, one that celebrates a different kind of race-an ongoing exercise in challenging ourselves to fully embrace what God has created us to be, and yet to do so with joy and a uniquely inspired team spirit.  The author of Hebrews draws repeated parallels between Old Testament wisdom and the message of Jesus and the "great cloud of witnesses" who have run the race before us.  Spend the summer with us delving more deeply into this powerful message, and be on the lookout for our next devotional series, beginning on May 29 th , with writers from Peace sharing daily insights from Hebrews.

May  29th: "Marathon Faith"-Jesus sustains us, giving us spiritual energy, soul 'muscles' and an attitude of endurance to run with excellence for the long haul.

June 5th: Graduate Recognition Sunday and "Relay Race Faith" -We are in the faith race together with "holy partners with a heavenly calling" passing the baton from believer to believer and cheering one another on.

June 12th: "Training Runs"-Training for the big faith race requires knowledge of the rules (God's living, active word), commitment, persistence and acknowledgement of our weaknesses that need strengthening.

June 19th: "Running Coach"-Like athletes, we sometimes give in to our weaknesses, or become discouraged and quit training (or quit the race altogether). God has sent Jesus to be our ultimate coach.

June 26th: "Pursuing the PR"-Diligent runners strive for a "personal record," their personal best time, a "perfect run." They study not only the basics of the sport, but also the practice and form of accomplished athletes (and we have the advantage, in our faith run, of visualizing Jesus).
