Missing a few of your favorite farmers at market?
There were a few empty spaces at the HLFM last Saturday so here's a quick update on farmers NOT at market but returning later this season. Bennett's Orchard is keeping us posted on their peach crop that was decimated by the early bloom/late killing frost-note the green peach survivor in photo on left. B ennett's returns to market once blueberry season starts and, with luck, peaches are harvested. Bennett's is now growing exotic varieties of Bennett melons that will come to market from mid-July through August. Magee Farms had a family wedding last Saturday, but will return to market this coming weekend so expect to see more asparagus and strawberries! Kathleen Moss of Mossflower Cottage will return to market on June 18th. Fischers' Farm returns to market once Japanese plums, peaches, and nectarines are ready in mid-July.

For full list of returning farmers and producers visit our website  www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org.

Last Saturday's demonstration and recipe.
On Saturday, May 14, Executive Chef Jordan Miller of Heirloom prepared a delicious Oyster Stew for market patrons to rave reviews!

Oyster Stew

Ingredients
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
2-3 russet potatoes, peeled and diced
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped celery
2 cups milk (or half and half for a richer stew)
1 cub reduced sherry wine
2 dozen oysters, shucked rained and reserved liquid
sale and cayenne
Fresh black pepper
1 tablespoon shopped garlic
1/34 cup finely chopped parsley, tarragon, chives, chervil mixed.

Directions
In a large sauté pan, melt the 4 tablespoons butter.  Add the onions and celery and cook until vegetables come translucent.  Stir in the milk and oyster liquid. Season the mixture with salt, cayenne and black pepper.  Be careful with the cayenne because it will make the stew spicy (for some that will be a good thing!) Bring the liquid to a simmer and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, making sure not to overcook the oysters.  Remove from heat.  Serve hot.
What's so special about the Historic Lewes Farmers Market --Volunteers!
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that sponsors the weekly farmers market, accepts SNAP and offers up to a $20 match for SNAP customers. Throughout the year, over 200 community volunteers (including an all-volunteer Board of Directors) assist with market operations from setup to breakdown. For market setup, we are especially grateful to the Tentations who put up our market tents and help farmers set up their tents and farm stands.  Abbey Feierstein and Nancy Beaumont coordinate the volunteer program and Cathie Rosenfeld oversees the SNAP program. Have a question? At Market, Volunteers wear tan aprons and the Market Manager wears a red apron-all of these dedicated volunteers will be happy to assist you! Want to become a volunteer? You can sign up at the Market Information table or email us at [email protected].

Our weekly market e-news will let you know more information about our farmers and producers this season, tell you what new foods are coming to market and share seasonal recipes. Thanks for shopping at HLFM!  To receive weekly emails from the Historic Lewes Farmers Market, email us at [email protected].
