Management By Walking Around
A Report From Your Executive Director

I doubt I possess a fraction of Captain Nat's intellect, but one thing that we do share is a tendency toward "management by walking around". Captain Nat used it to put his hands and eyes on every project that was underway in order to be able to make changes "on the fly" and to make certain that he was in complete control of the HMCo production line. I use it because there is so much exciting stuff going on around here that I can't sit still.

The Hall of Boats has been completely re-organized and it now includes our 1/6th-scale model of 1903 America's Cup defender RELIANCE. Dan Shea is restoring two of the Sailing School's H12s, the volunteers in the Restoration Shop are working on two incredible projects and the waterfront will soon be buzzing with kids, boats, weddings and generally happy controlled chaos. Plus, some pretty boats are starting to show up here for this weekend's 7th Classic Yacht Symposium. Which makes it really hard for me to sit at my desk and type this, so like Captain Nat would do, I'm going to go check on things on the "shop floor".

PS: If you're at the WoodenBoat Show June 24-26 in Mystic, come by our booth and say hello. We'll be there with Bernie Gustin's gorgeous Buzzard's Bay 15 MURMUR.
Gowrie Group
Gowrie/Pure Join the Team

We're happy to welcome our newest Silver Level sponsor Gowrie Group. Gowrie is partnering with 2015 Silver Level sponsor Pure Insurance to support the HMM mission and several key events this year including the Classic Yacht Symposium and the Herreshoff Classic Yacht Regatta.

The Gowrie team are sailors, and they have years of experience helping clients "de-risk" their lives on and around the water.

" When you grow up on Buzzards Bay, with fifty or more H-12's in the harbor, Herreshoff was always a revered name," shared Dan Cooney of Gowrie Group.  "Supporting the Herreshoff Marine Museum is like supporting apple pie and the flag - the innovation story at HMM is the story of how our country became the greatest industrial country in the 20 th century.  It makes Gowrie Group enormously proud to support the Herreshoff Marine Museum and its staff and volunteers who execute the organization's mission."

You can click on the Gowrie Group logo to visit their site and find an agent in your area.
If you know Lee, don't tell him about this - he hates the spotlight.

Lee likes to think he's a volunteer, but he's really much more than that. He volunteers at the museum as part of John Cobb's "Wednesday Crew", but he can generally be found here on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday as well - for which we are quite thankful! Without volunteers, we don't have a working museum, and folks like Lee Hayes are the heart and soul of this place.

Celebrate July 3rd in Bristol!

Join us for the best Independence Day party on the waterfront! Enjoy live music by the Six Digg-It Band, awesome BBQ by Preppy Pig, the best clam chowdah around by Blount Fine Foods, and a fantastic view of the fireworks above the harbor. Click here to get your tickets to this rocking party today!

Summer Sailing 2016!

New this spring, we are offering after school sailing on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the museum. Space is limited and quickly filling up, so if you want to jump in on it, sign up soon.

Summer is right around the corner, and Head Sailing Instructor Jeff McDonough is here preparing for the Herreshoff Summer Seamanship Program. Our weekly youth program teaches sailing and seamanship skills in a variety of safe and stable keel boats including classic Herreshoff 12½s, and adult lessons are also available. Sign up today while there is still space!

If you've seen the Herreshoff 12½s out sailing on the bay and you've always wanted to sail one, now you can! Though some say that it is one of the best kept secrets at the museum, adult sailors who are COLUMBIA-level members of higher are able to utilize the Seamanship Program Fleet through our Rental Program. For more information click here or contact Kirk Cusic at k.cusic@herreshoff.org.

Do you know someone looking for a summer job? We are currently seeking a Dockmaster and adult sailing instructors - please let us know if you know of anyone outstanding who'd like to join our team this summer.

We could also use some help with our "wish list" of equipment for the Sailing School as we prepare for the upcoming season. We would welcome any donation, and they are all tax deductible!
  • 12½ sails (mainsails and jibs) and spars (masts, jib clubs, booms, and gaffs)
  • A new RIB for our fleet of safety boats
  • Small anchors (for 12½s and Bullseyes)
If you are interested in donating your used equipment, please contact Kirk Cusic
The Annual HMM Wharf Sale: June 24-25

OK, fans have been asking when we're doing the Wharf Sale - you ask, we tell!

This year, however, we're taking it to a new level. In addition to the gently-loved equipment exchange bargain hunters have come to know, we're adding a variety of new categories such as cordage and electronics, and we'll have some regional artisans on hand to demonstrate their craft. Think of it as a Wharf Festival!

And to help us stock the shelves, we'd appreciate the donation of equipment you don't need anymore that's still in good shape. Please contact Kirk Cusic at k.cusic@herreshoff.org and/or bring your donation by the museum sometime between now and June 19th.
7th Classic Yacht Symposium: May 20th-22nd
"HMM's biennial Classic Yacht Symposium is like Woodstock for Classic Yacht enthusiasts."

The  Classic Yacht Symposium is a collaborative event designed to enhance understanding, appreciation and exploration of new ideas on all aspects of classic yachts including:
  • Ten Great Papers by Experts/Owners
  • Shop Visits: Active Projects
  • Evening Panel Discussion on Breadth & Boundaries of Classic Yachts
  • Museum Campus Visit & Exhibits
  • Evening Social Events
Over the course of three days, attendees will visit restoration shops to ogle over their projects, debate the definition of "classic" with an expert panel including John Rousmaniere, Matt Murphy, Jim Taylor and Donald Tofias, attend sessions with a variety of scholarly papers on a range of subjects presented by their authors, and bond with fellow classic yacht enthusiasts over adult refreshments.

CYS is unique in its special collaborative atmosphere because the event attracts a mix of owners, designers, builders and enthusiasts who gather bi-annually to celebrate the fine yachts of a bygone era and share their thoughts on the challenges of preserving, restoring, sailing and racing them.

The Herreshoff Brothers and SPRITE: A Partnership Begins

Where does one go to learn about the partnership that in 1878 established the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company? A good place to start is to visit the restored catboat SPRITE in the museum's Hall of Boats.
