NURSING HOMES AND HOME CARE REGULATIONS REVIEW
Edmonton Open Houses
June 2 and 3, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Delta Edmonton South (4440 Gateway Blvd.)

Alberta Health is undertaking a review of continuing care regulations that are expiring in 2017 and representatives of seniors organizations are invited to provide feedback at an upcoming open house.

The Home Care Regulation will be discussed during the morning (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.). Discussion will focus on:
  • The basket of services provided in home care
  • Home support services such as housekeeping and home maintenance
  • Meeting the needs of caregivers
The Nursing Homes Regulations will be discussed during the afternoon (1 to 4:30 p.m.). Discussion will focus on:
  • Care providers
  • Eligibility
  • Social and leisure activities
  • Meal requirements

TOOLS FOR INCLUSION

The City of Edmonton has developed a toolkit specifically designed for senior serving organizations that can be used to ensure that facilities, programs and services feel welcoming and inclusive to all seniors.

A launch event is being held:

Mill Woods Seniors & Multicultural Centre (2nd floor, 2610 Hewes Way)

Every organization that attends will receive a printed copy of the toolkit which includes checklists and planning tools that can assist you with programming, communications, and strategic planning. 

A short presentation will introduce the toolkit followed by social time to discuss the diversity and inclusion needs in your organization in a fun and informal environment. Consultants from ZenEv & Associates and Centre for Race and Culture will be available to answer questions and provide support for inclusion initiatives.

OUTREACH COORDINATOR FOR OLDER ADULTS
North Edmonton Seniors Association

The Outreach Coordinator provides outreach services to enhance the overall well-being of isolated and at-risk seniors (age 55 years and older) in the North East Edmonton geographical area and supports seniors to age in place in the community. 
 
Key responsibilities include:
  • Identify isolated and at-risk seniors, conduct home visits, and provide social and emotional support to clients
  • Plan and organize outreach programs and activities, outings, or events
  • Recruit and train volunteers to assist in the outreach program
  • Advocate for services on behalf of the clients as needed
  • Facilitate outreach partnerships throughout the community
Key Qualifications include:
  • An undergraduate degree in Social Work
  • Demonstrated knowledge and interest in the area of gerontology
  • Excellent communications, assessment and interviewing skills
  • Knowledge of community services and resources pertaining to older adults
  • Evidence of sensitivity and respect for individuals, evidence of good professional boundaries
  • A vehicle and valid operator's license
  • The successful candidate will be required to obtain a satisfactory Police Information Check Certificate including Vulnerable Sector Check

WEEKLY SOUP & BANNOCK LUNCH

Two different soups, bannock, dessert, coffee and tea are available at the weekly soup and bannock lunch. Activities such as bingo, entertainment, or information presenters are held immediately after. There is also a 50/50 draw each week. The GeriActors have been turning stories into plays for the last fifteen years. BAZAAR CALL OUT
Strathcona Place 55+ Centre (10831 University Ave)

The annual fundraising bazaar hosted by Strathcona Place 55+ Centre is now a two-day event so they are getting the word out early that they are seeking volunteers and donations of items. The bazaar takes place September 9 and 10, 2016.

Volunteers: Call 780-433-5807 to have your name and activity preference added to the bazaar's volunteer registry.

Donations: The centre is happy to accept books (except textbooks), toys, games, records, CDs, DVDs, Christmas decorations, purses, totes, jewellery, small appliances, candles and holders, and office supplies. Providing your donations well in advance of the event makes it easier for the volunteers to do all the work they need to do for this event. Volunteer/Work Opportunities for Seniors
GYMNASTICS CHAMPIONSHIP VOLUNTEERS

Eight gymnastic clubs from the Edmonton area are hosting the 2016 Global New Canadian Gymnastics Championships from June 1-4 and an event of this magnitude requires many volunteers to make it a success.

There is a job for everyone and no knowledge of gymnastics is required. All you need is a willingness to help and a great smile! All volunteers will receive an official 2016 Championships Volunteer T-Shirt as well as entry into the sessions on the day they are volunteering.

THE WORKS ART & DESIGN FESTIVAL

The Works Art & Design Festival is a free thirteen-day festival that fills downtown Edmonton with compelling art, design, and entertainment. Now in its 31st year, the festival runs from June 23 to July 5, 2016, and attracts volunteers and patrons of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
 
The festival offers a range of volunteer opportunities. For example, exhibit attendants learn about the art on display and engage patrons in conversation, while the family programs crew works with children and adults to create their own art and unleash their creativity. Festival organizers value volunteers' individual desires and work closely with them to develop a unique and fulfilling experience. 

Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of 10 hours over the festival which can be broken into multiple shifts over the thirteen days. Volunteer shifts are a minimum of three hours each.
