Thanksgiving Food Resources
As we approach Thanksgiving, we would like to acknowledge the circumstances and needs that may arise for students during this holiday. Some students are not able to go home due to financial constraints and find themselves during the four day break with limited resources for necessities like food. Learn about low-cost grocery options, low-cost restaurant meals, and free meals in the community, including the new UC Berkeley Food Pantry here, and share it!

Do you remember the last time you got the flu?
To protect yourself and your community against the flu you need a flu shot every year. Drop-in to one of our two final flu shot clincs, no appointment needed! Cost is free for students with SHIP, $30 for others. Find more info on our Flu Shots webpage.

What do you find most interesting about working in college health?

I find it interesting, challenging, and rewarding to work in college health helping to take care of our students so they can achieve their dreams.

What is your favorite quote?

From Chinese Taoism Lao Zi:

"Knowing others is wisdom;
Knowing the self is enlightenment.

Mastering others requires force;
Mastering the self requires strength."

Great American Smokeout: November 20, 2014

The American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November each year by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. UHS provides smoking cessation resources for quitting or preparing to quit. Share this important day with your family and friends.

With the assistance of UHS cessation services, Meckell Milburn, UHS Health Educator and BBC Outreach Coordinator, has been a non-smoker for one year! See her story above.

It's almost too easy to go through the week thinking of all the things you have to do, all the meetings to go to, all the places to be...

Before you know it, the weekend comes and goes, and then it's time to restart the cycle of obligations. Something that becomes difficult for us as UC Berkeley students is to cherish the good moments in our lives, and have those shape our outlook, as opposed to having the stressors in our life dictate our mindsets. The harm is that hanging onto stressors and constantly going through the motions ultimately becomes habit. And the only way to get rid of it is to change our mindsets - this is difficult, but not impossible. The key is to start small: challenge yourself to start savoring the good moments of a day rather than dwelling on obligations. Build from there. The goal is to train yourself to maintain a positive outlook, and as a result, cultivate the happiness in your life.

Three Precautions for Those Traveling to Ebola-affected Countries Over the Break

CDC and University of California highlight these three critical procedures for those who may be traveling to Liberia, Guinea, or Sierra Leone for humanitarian aid or other personal reasons over the upcoming holiday break:

  1. Notify campus of travel
  2. Register with travel insurance
  3. Plan for 21-day active monitoring and potential self-quarantine upon return

Stay updated: UHS Ebola pageCDC Ebola page or CA Department of Public Health Ebola hotline (855) 421-5921 (M-F 8am-5pm).

Sex Goddess
What are you thankful for?

Add the Tang Center pharmacy to your list of things to be thankful for - especially when it comes to safer sex supplies. The Tang Center Pharmacy has just what a Bear needs to practice safer sex at a lower cost than most online and local pharmacies. For just $2 you can get ten (10) traditional condoms while larger size condoms are available 10 for $2.50! That's certainly worth being thankful for. My co-workers and I in the Health Promotion unit are thankful to provide safer sex supply samples to students during our campus-wide and outreach events, and during Health and Wellness appointments, but not on a walk-up basis.

Safer sex is fun, sexy, and smart. To increase pleasure and condom durability, try pairing with water or silicone-based lubricant (lube):

  • 1-2 drops of lube (water or silicone-based) on the side touching the condom wearer (the "inside" of the condom).
  • Add as much lube to the other side as desired

Safer sex can be an adventure - try condoms in a variety of materials, sizes, colors, textures, and flavors! (Flavored condoms are for mouth-to-penis/toy play and are not recommended for vaginal or anal penetration.)

Consent is mandatory. Enthusiastically and proactively ask for and give permission to share a sexual experience with your partner free of force or coercion with each experience every time!

XOXO,
Ms. Robin, Sex Goddess
