MTA/NJ Attends American Boating Congress in Washington D.C.

The 2016 American Boating Congress (ABC) in Washington, DC wrapped up last week and was deemed by all a great success. The ABC is an annual opportunity for the marine industry to come together in D.C. and use a united voice to educate Congress. It is also a great opportunity to network with other industry groups from around the country. A number of keynote speakers shared insight and expertise during the event. For more information, click here.

Executive Director, Melissa Danko along with MTA/NJ Board Members, Don Ditzel of Comstock Yacht Sales & Marina, Fred Brueggemann of Key Harbor Marina/Statewide Marine Services, and Ed Harrison, III of Baywood Marina, visited U.S. Congressional offices of Congressmen Pallone, Lance, Norcross, MacArthur, Smith, Frelinghuysen & Senator Booker. They spoke about the importance of the boating industry to New Jersey, the economic impacts and the loss of registered boaters in the state and the urgency to support the industry to help grow boating. They also provided information about many national issues including Ethanol and Fisheries.  Click here for more information on all of the Policy Briefs from ABC this year.

The Marine Trades Association of NJ was honored with the ABC Ambassador Award.  The award recognizes MTA/NJ for its promotional and educational efforts as a co-host of the event.

Melissa Danko also participated in a number of industry meetings including the Recreational Boating Leadership Council, of which she is a member.  The Leadership Council's meetings marked concrete progress in strengthening industry advocacy, the promotion of youth boating programs and diversity in boating, and the marketing efforts of the Discover Boating campaign.  Melissa is a member of the Youth Committee, whose priority goals are to quantify and inventory existing youth boating programs to understand opportunities and needs, explore opportunities with existing and new high school level fishing and boating clubs, create an industry-wide commitment to youth programs such as Sea Scouts, share news with industry stakeholders regarding their work and identify areas of opportunity. The Recreational Boating Leadership Council is a group of leaders from across all segments of the marine industry working together to address growth challenges facing the marine industry.  Click here for more information on recent news from the Recreational Boating Leadership Council.

Melissa also attended a meeting of the National Marine Trades Council, which includes Executive Directors from Marine Trade Associations from around the nation. The group meets a few times a year to discuss Association issues and boat shows.

National Marina Day Update
June 11, 2016
Ocean Conservancy invites all marinas to consider celebrating the marine ecosystems we love by holding a Marina Cleanup as part of National Marina Day! By boat, on foot, at your local Marina or elsewhere, please join the movement at www.oceanconservancy.org/marinacleanup.

Boaters and Marina Operators are in a unique position to make an impact by removing trash that's already made its way to the water. Experts of their local waters and often firsthand witnesses to the negative effects of ocean trash, boaters play a vital role in realizing trash free seas.

Register your facility here and Ocean Conservancy will send you a Cleanup Toolkit for your event including trash bags, disposable gloves, and green boating resources from Ocean Conservancy's Good Mate Program.
