Administrator's Corner

Dear parents, students, and TJ community,

This has been an incredible experience as I've served my time here as principal of Thomas Jefferson High School. I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement on this journey.

I am so proud of the growth that our students and staff have made, and the contributions our kids have made to the TJ community. I will miss my time with you, but I feel so assured that you are in great hands with MIke Christoff as your principal.

Please know that TJ will always be in my heart.

Suzanne Morris-Sherer
Principal

  • Nick Wilson and  Maxx Robinson  have been chosen to speak at the Challenge Denver fundraising event on Wednesday evening.  They wrote an essay starting with the "If you really knew me..." exercise that the program is so known for and they both plan on sharing their story and how Challenge Day helped them in front of 150-200 people most of which are corporate sponsors.  The were both willing to be vulnerable which we all know is not an easy thing to do.
  • Exciting news! IKEA came to TJ and interviewed 13 Spartans to help fill 30 summer positions. ALL 13 have made it on to the 2nd round in this process on their way to being hired by IKEA . IKEA was blown away by their professionalism, resumes and cover letters. While IKEA was here Mr. Perry met with their marketing director and she has so many ideas for next year in ways they could help TJ financially, in classrooms and also a sports day they host every year in May. We look forward to having IKEA as a Community Partner! The following 13 are the students who should be congratulated on their efforts:  Valyntine Lonergan,  John Riviera,  Seth Stoneburner,  Abloi Ater,  Hanna Zuy,  Katarina Withington,  Santino Salazar,  Caitlin Holland,  Diana Ruiz,  Ciara Dixon.  Eric Ilunga.  Michael Vasilco, and  Sean McNearney

JROTC News
Rocky Mountain Regionals
Our teams absolutely killed it at RMR on the 30 th of April. Not only did we earn trophies, we cleaned house with a total of thirteen trophies over nine competitions!

Drill Team
Drill Team proved all their practice was never in vain. They got 1st place armed exhibition, 4 th place armed regulation, 5 th place 2 man, 3 rd place 4 man, 1 st place individual drill, 1 st place armed overall. "It was the best drill meet we have ever had, and I look forward to next year!" C/CPT Dale Williams, the commander of Drill Team, stated about their performance.

Honor Platoon
Honor Platoon stomped their way into victory with 1 st place unarmed exhibition, 2 nd place unarmed regulation, 1 st place unarmed overall.

Color Guard
While Color Guard did not earn a trophy, Color Guard still did well at 6 th place Color Guard A, and were only a few points off on placing 5 th.

The Future for our Teams
Due to our teams doing so well, both drill team and HP are eligible for going to Texas next year! However, many of our drill team members are seniors and won't be coming back for that experience.  This means our incoming freshman will have to pick up the ball and make sure we succeed in Texas!
Honor Platoon do not have to worry about that problem too much, however. Most of HP consists of sophomores and juniors, so instead of learning something new, all they have to do is improve.
Regardless of what happens, next year will sure be interesting for our teams!
Congratulations to Sabrina Janczak!
TJ French teacher extraordinaire, Madame Sabrina Janczak, has been recognized by the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers (CCFLT) as Colorado Teacher of the Year

The CCFLT Teacher of the Year is awarded each year to an outstanding world language teacher who is also a leader in the teaching profession, an advocate for world languages, shares best practices with others, and is involved in the advancement of language education.  Madame Janczak demonstrates all of these qualities, and more!  She is a leader in our profession, and spends much of her own time training and demonstrating her techniques to teachers from all over the world!  She hosts teachers from all over Denver and the USA in her TJ classroom, and welcomes all to observe her dedication to the use of  Comprehensible Input  methods. She presents at conferences so that she can share her skills with other teachers.  This summer, you can see her present in Agen, France and at the International Forum on Language Teaching in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Recipients of the CCFLT Teacher of the Year award go on to compete regionally and nationally with other World Language teachers, with the ultimate goal of being named ACTFL Teacher of the Year by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

If you see Madame Janczak in the halls, be sure to tell her Félicitations (Congratulations) and Bonne Chance (Good Luck)!
First Place for the First Time
TJ's choir students bring home two first place trophies.
On May 14th, TJ took a group of forty students to the Music in the Parks choir competition. The past two years they have brought home second place trophies, but this year they did not settle and excelled, bringing two first place trophies back for the Spartans. Read more

Summer Resources for Families

Support Spartan Football...Be a Triathlon Volunteer!
Spartan Football is raising funds by participating in the Dillon Triathlon on Sat., Sept 10th as volunteers. For every hour of volunteer time we earn and average of $5-10 for the football program at TJ.  Not everyone in the volunteer group has to be part of the football team or a student at TJHS. We can use as many helping hands as possible. Volunteers must be 16 years or older so parents, friends, siblings and anyone that wants to spend a day in the beauty of Dillon and experience the excitement of a triathlon while helping the participants and sponsors and benefiting TJ HS can volunteer for as little as 4 hours and up to 10 hours.

We need at least 10 volunteers that put their group name as "TJ HS Football" when signing up online for a time slot in order to earn the funds. Please visit this site t o see the possible volunteer positions.  All volunteers will receive an awesome Under Armour long sleeve tech shirt, and community service hours.

Please let Laura Whalen, l[email protected] or 303-681-7226, know if you are planning to sign up. We have already reserved 7 of the most lucrative volunteer slots so check with Laura before signing up online to see if one of the previously reserved spots if something you would like to do.  We will also be providing transportation for those that need a ride to Dillon. Please let Laura know if you need transportation.

Calling all High School Leaders!
Are you a youth leader in Denver interested in pursuing the environmental field? Are you a student who loves the outdoors and is interested in meaningful volunteer work by your river? Whether you are thinking about being a wildlife biologist when you grow up, want to learn about working with kids, love exploring the outdoors, or just want to meet new people and help out your South Platte River - come join the   Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC)!

GLC is a youth group in Denver for high school students to learn more about the environment and become active, informed citizens. At least once a month The Greenway Foundation will host a GLC event and meeting, often down by the South Platte River, involving volunteer work projects, team-building exercises, and outdoor adventures around the state.

Next GLC Event:  "Parks in Progress" will be held May 20th, at Grant Frontier Park and Pasquinel's Landing. GLC students will visit Grant Frontier Park, which is currently undergoing major renovations as part of the larger River Vision Implementation Plan (RVIP). After touring the "park in progress" and having a chance to hear from landscape engineers working on the project, GLC students will put in some service work hours by cleaning up the nearby (and recently renovated) Pasquinel's Landing.
