Energy Institute High School students played an important role in this year's Offshore Technology Conference!  We had several groups of students attend the conference for very special events, including a group of eleven students who competed earlier in the year to present at Thursday's luncheon.  Congratulations to our student presenters who proudly represented Energy Institute at this incredibly high profile event!
The Offshore Technology Conference

Energy Institute High School students had a number of opportunities to participate in the Offshore Technology Conference last week.  We are excited our students were included in this important industry event and are very thankful to BP and ExxonMobil for providing such an incredible learning opportunity.

BP Suite Experience: Energy Institute students were invited to be very special guests of BP last week at the Offshore Technology Conference.  Students met with BP executives at the BP suite set up for the conference.  They were treated to lunch, swag bags, and a virtual experience testing out new BP technology.  We are so thankful for BP and the experience they provided for our students.

ExxonMobil STEM Day: ExxonMobil invited 25 Energy students to attend OTC as their guests and participate in a STEM experience . They attended a free, one-day energy education workshop.  Student activities included a keynote speaker, tour of the world's leading offshore oil and natural gas technology exhibitions, and hands-on classroom activities all correlated to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills science standards. Energy teachers received comprehensive information about the scientific concepts of energy and its importance while discovering the world of oil and natural gas exploration and production.

For more information read the OTC story on the HISD  Blog.
School of Excellence Award

Congratulations to the entire Energy community for receiving the Magnet Schools of America School of Excellence Merit Award!  Last week, Energy Institute was honored during the annual School's of Excellence Award Ceremony.   A huge thank you to our board member Diana Davila, our Chief School Support Officer Dr. Omogbehin, our School Support Officer Jennifer Topper, our Assistant Superintendent Office of School Choice Noelia Longoria, and former Grant Officer Manager Jennifer Todd for all of their support and attending our awards ceremony.
Shell Internship Program

Gerardo Escobedo,  Karen Garcia,  Jocelyn Garza,  Junior Lopez, and  Fernanda Reyes

We are excited to announce this year's group of 11th grade students who have been extended offers to join the Shell cooperative opportunity program for the summer and the 2016-2017 school year! They have the opportunity to begin their internship this summer and continue to work with Shell throughout their senior year.  Students will have first hand exposure to what a career in the energy industry looks like.  We are very excited about this opportunity from Shell.  A big thank you to Ms. Garcia for coordinating this on behalf of our students!
Texas Heart Institute Summer Research Program
Diana Prieto has landed the summer internship experience of her dreams! Diana initially began corresponding with Dr. Andrea S. Gobin, after Ms.Estrella recommended Diana read about Dr. Gobin's regenerative medicine research.  Dr. Gobin invited Diana for coffee and to visit her at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Medical Center.  Diana had the opportunity to meet with the Head of Cardiology and the Assistant Director of the Regenerative Heart Research Program. During this meeting Diana spoke about her experiences at Energy Institute and what she would like to do in the future.  Even though she is currently in high school, they invited her to apply for their Summer Research Program, typically reserved for college students.  Diana wrote, " I want to be a part of this program is to further my education in the medical field through the hands-on experience this summer program can provide by shadowing medical professionals and viewing real-life procedures."  Diana learned last week that she was selected for the program and will spend ten weeks this summer working side by side with the nation's most innovative team of cardiologists, biomedical engineers, researchers, biochemists, and university students.  We could not be more excited for Diana!  With encouragement from Ms. Estrella, Diana sought out opportunities and people who could provide valuable mentorship and exposure to the industry she hopes to join in the future. Diana took initiative and demonstrated perserverance in order to make this goal a reality.  Good luck this summer - we can't wait to hear about your experience!
Laptop Check
This Friday, May 13th, we will have our final laptop check of the year.  We will be checking for the PowerUp laptop, charger, bag, shoulder strap, and battery. We will also be creating invoices so that students and parents have opportunities to pay for any missing or lost equipment prior to the last day of school.

Please ensure that the students bring these items to school for the PowerUp laptop check next Friday, May 13th.
