Julia and the Art of Practical Travel
Ms. DiBella recommends Julia and the Art of Practical Travel by Leslie M. M. Blume

Adventure, history, stereotypes and surprises... Julia and the Art of Practical Travel by Leslie M. M. Blume has it all and more. Julia, a young girl growing up in the 1960s, lives with her conventional, practical and responsible Aunt Constance and her Grandmother in a stately home along the Hudson River. When her grandmother dies rather suddenly, Julia's life is turned upside down. Aunt Constance takes Julia and a few "practical" items on a trip across the United States in search of Julia's long-lost, hippie mother. Along the way, they encounter voodoo magic in New Orleans, a gold mine in a western ghost town, hippies on Haight-Ashbury in San Fran, and many other fascinating characters.

This is a story that contrasts the formal, reserved generation of the 1950's with the free-spirited, anti-establishment generation of the 1960's. With one foot in childhood and one in adulthood, Julia experiences heartbreak and friendship while trying to find her strength and a place of belonging. Today's reader will be intrigued at how Julia and Aunt Constance make the long drive from the east to the west coast without cell phones, GPS, convenient rest stops, wifi, audiobooks, Sirius radio and Google. Julia and the Art of Practical Travel would be a great summer read for a tween who is curious about what life was like in the 1960's from an 11 year-old's point of view.
