Goodwill Now Accepting Applications for GoodCare Healthcare Training  (All Areas)

Goodwill Industries of the Valleys is now accepting applications for GoodCare. GoodCare is a free healthcare training program. Through a partnership with Community Colleges and Adult Education or Literacy Programs, participants will benefit from supportive services, life skills, education, training, and assistance to obtain employment in the healthcare industry. Individuals served will enter an in-demand occupation and have the opportunity to grow and advance their career through healthcare pathways. GoodCare will serve individuals who are TANF recipients, as well as other low income individuals.
 
Participating Community Colleges include: Wytheville, New River, Virginia Western, Dabney S. Lancaster, and Central Virginia. Additional Partners include multiple businesses in the healthcare sector and adult education programs throughout the service area. GoodCare will also advance Virginia's professional learning community, expand regional partnerships, and improve the regional Workforce systems. 
 
Funding for the program is provided by Health Profession Opportunity Grants from the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

*HPOG is a study funded by the federal government which is being conducted to determine how these training opportunities help people improve their skills and find better jobs. During the study, all new eligible applicants will be selected by lottery to participate in these training opportunities. Not all eligible applicants will be selected to participate in these opportunities.

XGoodwill's 2015 Community Impact Report is Now Available Online

The 2015 Goodwill Community Impact Report, which is now available online, showcases the stories of six individuals who participated in Goodwill programs. Individuals such as Charles, and older worker from Waynesboro, who needed assistance finding a job,

The report also includes organizational outcomes that impact not only individuals, but also communities, businesses, and the environment as well. Other features include photo and videos of other individuals who have been impacted through the work of Goodwill.

PromGoodwill to Hold Prom for Rocky Mount Day Support Program 
(Rocky Mount)

The Goodwill in Rocky Mount will be holding a prom for individuals in their Medicaid Waiver Day Support Program. Parents, caregivers, Goodwill Staff, and businesses in the community have been helping to plan this all day event. Licensed cosmetologists will be providing hair and makeup, a limo service will take individuals on a short ride, and a band and DJ will be providing the entertainment. 

"Prom is coming up and we know that a lot of individuals in our program did not get to go when they were in high school," states Maurice Hicks, Medicaid Waiver Case Aide. "A considerable amount of people here at Goodwill and businesses in the community have worked hard to create a prom that they deserve to attend."

Goodwill offers Day Support in Rocky Mount and Roanoke to individuals with disabilities who receive Medicaid Waiver funding. Services in the Day Support program include training, assistance and specialized supervision for acquisition, retention, improvement of self help, socialization, and adaptive skills. The program provides peer interaction and opportunities for community and social integration. Day support focuses on enabling an individual to attain or maintain his or her maximum functional level and may include training.

(Roanoke)

Roanoke Valley Project SEARCH will hold Graduation:
Thursday, May 26th

Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
Second Floor Auditorium

This year's Commencement Speaker will be Jim Rothrock, Commissioner of the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services
   
This is the sixth graduating class for Project SEARCH. In all, 36 individuals have graduated from the program, with 26 having found employment as a result of the training received while in the program.

"Project SEARCH provides on-site training to youth with disabilities through a partnership with Carillon clinic," states Wanda Bass, Project SEARCH Coordinator. "This training helps the youth become work ready upon graduation from high school and the Project SEARCH. The goal of Project SEARCH is to provide youth the skills they need to find competitive employment, so they will know the pride of contributing to their families and the community." Wanda adds, "Graduation is meaningful for the youth, their families, and all of us at Goodwill. It's inspiring and gratifying to know that they are now ready for the work world and have achieved greater independence."

Project SEARCH is a one year program that provides education and on-site training to prepare youth with disabilities to be work ready upon graduation from high school. The program, which serves as a workforce alternative for students in their last year of high school, is located at a community health-care facility.

UGoodwill Provides Job Seeker Services to Help the Community Get Back to Work
 
Goodwill hosts a variety of Job Seeker Services to help individuals in the community get back to work and improve their employment opportunities. Among these services are a variety of computer classes, workshops, job clubs, and job fairs. All events are free and open to the public with prior registration.
