E-Arkive The Electronic Newsletter for Ark and Dove

This Sunday, May 8th, all are invited to a very special Mother's Day as we celebrate Ascension Sunday, the confirmation of six of our young adults and enjoy an exciting preview of the June 12th Cantata, Mass of the Children.

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR JON

Dear Ark and Dove Friends and Families,

I am pleased to announce that six of our youth will be confirmed this Sunday at the 11 am service. Confirmation this Sunday comes after a year of fun, fellowship, and faithful discernment of what we believe. Sarah Anthis, Jack Burnett, Nicole Chidlow, Veronica Musican, Ethan Schafer, and Logan Walcutt have worked hard. I have been challenged and stretched by them. It has been so wonderful to get to know them. I look forward to the ways they will inspire us as members of Ark and Dove.

Recent studies of American religious youth suggest that passionate and purposeful faith sticks with youth into their adult years. Simply put, if we are lackadaisical in our life of faith, how can we expect our youth to be anything more? I am thankful for the parents, sponsors, and many leaders of this congregation who have supported the confirmands this year and for years passed. They have been inspired by passionate and purposeful faith. May we continue to inspire them more.

On the topic of enthusiastic and engaged faith, I want to invite you to engage the issue of race through music, art, and theology this coming Wednesday, May 11, at 7 pm. Vital faith cannot ignore injustice in our society and faith comes alive through discussion. I do hope you'll join us. Please see below for more information. Additionally, Pastor Tim will be hosting an exploration of the six marks of discipleship for those curious about the life of discipleship on May 26 at 7 pm. I believe that these six marks are key to a passionate and purposeful faith. More information is included below.

I am thankful to grow in faith with you.

Peace,
Jon

HOUSEHOLD PRAYER

While [Jesus] was blessing [the disciples], he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the temple blessing God. --Luke 24:51-53

God of unending praise: Jesus Christ is risen and exalted. May we find our minds and hearts so uplifted by this news that we are moved to praise. Were it not for Christ risen, we would have no hope. Were it not for Christ ascended, we would have no faith. In leaving, Jesus promised the coming of the Spirit to fill us with faith, hope, and love. May this promise ring true today and evermore. Amen.

I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him,  so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints,  and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.  --Ephesians 1:17-19

God of wisdom and revelation: You are unfathomable and your greatness is immeasurable. And yet, you reveal yourself to us in your Son Jesus, in your world, and in your people. Coming to know you is a process and in coming to know you we grow ourselves. Help us to patiently seek you in prayer, in mission, and in mercy. Grant us wisdom and, with wisdom, humility and love. Amen.

TES FOR YOU

On June 5, at the 11:00 service, the contemporary band will present the music of one of the best new bands out of the U.K., the Rend Collective.  In case you haven't had a chance to hear their unique sound, here are some fun tracks to listen to, which feature one of the MOST interesting instruments - the stomp stick. Enjoy!

PLEDGING

Dear Friends,

In my sermon on Sunday, I spoke about Stewardship and encouraged all of us who give to church by EFT or online-giving to use a card in the chair back that says, I Contribute by Electronic Funds Transfer and/or Online Giving, as a way of physically participating in the dedication of our offerings to God.  The only thing I don't like about EFT and online giving is the absence of the ritual of putting something in the offering basket.  Using the dedication card makes our electronic work an act of worship.

I also mentioned that our church encourages our member to make donations to the charities and the not-for-profit organizations of their choice.  These gifts we make to other social service organizations are a part of our answer to the Biblical call to give 10% or the tithe.  I then asked anyone who had ever made such an online or electronic  gift to write the name of the recipient on the back of the dedication card and that we would share  the list in the E-Arkive.  The list below is impressive.  As a congregation, we support a diverse array of organizations.  This is something to celebrate. ~ Pastor Tim, tims10@aol.com

SIX MARKS OF DISCIPLESHIP

What does it mean to be a faithful member of Ark and Dove? It means that you believe in Jesus AND you strive to live the Six Marks of Discipleship.  If you have joined the church in the last five years or if you cannot name the Six Marks or you are not sure what discipleship means, this 90 minute exploration is for you.  We will pass no judgements and give no grades, but we will explore discipleship together with Pastor Tim on May 26 from 7:00 to 8:30.
THE CHRISTIAN WALLET
THE CHRISTIAN WALLET by Mike Slaughter.

Is your budget out of balance?  Are you facing challenges with money?  Is your work meaningful and enjoyable?  Do you find it hard to talk about money at home?  Pastor Tim will be leading a three week study group on the book The Christian Wallet by the Methodist Minister, Mike Slaughter.  The book is broken into three sections, How We Spend, How We Give, How We Live and has chapter titles like Balancing the Budget, Responsible Investing and Work to Live or Live to Work

There are ten chapters - if you sign up to be in this group, you will be agreeing to read at least one chapter in each section before we discuss that section.  Our discussion will follow this schedule.

June 2    How We Spend
June 9    How We Give
June 16  How We Live

We will meet from 7:00 pm to about 8:30 pm on the three Thursday nights above. Or you can take the express One Night Stand option June 14 from 6:30 to 9:30, same deal - you have to read three chapters one from each section.  Bring your own dinner, and we will munch together.  Pastor Tim, tstern10@aol.com.
