Alumnus Gary Walsh '66 was honoured with the Ignatian Spirit Award at the 3rd Annual St. Bonaventure's College Tribute Dinner on April 28th.

The Ignatian Spirit Award honours a person who has made an invaluable contribution to their community and who truly demonstrates what it means to be a "Man or Woman for and with Others."  The individual embraces the ideals of St Ignatius Loyola and reflects the characteristics and qualities inherent in a Jesuit education at St. Bonaventure's College. Gary Walsh  certainly  fits that profile.

Born and raised in St. John's, Gary is a Jesuit educated, award winning professional architect. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Memorial University, a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies from Dalhousie University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Dalhousie University (formerly Nova Scotia Technical College).  He has also studied architecture at the University of Kyoto (Japan).  While attending Memorial, Mr. Walsh was inducted into the Athletic Honour Society with Distinction.

Gary has had a distinguished record of volunteer service in the community with the NL Architects Association, Quidi Vidi Rennies River Foundation, Crow's Nest Officers' Club, St. John's Board of Trade and Swiler's Rugby Club.  He was named the 2013 St. Bonaventure's College Volunteer of the Year for his extraordinary service to his alma mater with the facilities and alumni committees and the Ignatius Society. In 2014, he helped establish the "Fallen 51 Dinner", an annual event which honours deceased St. Bon's Alumni who died in World War I. Funds from this dinner support our Bursary Program.

During his speech that night Gary noted that some people may look at the tuition cost of St. Bon's and wonder if it is worth it. He then added that e ducation is a bargain when you consider the cost of ignorance. Gary followed that by speaking of his experience at St.Bon's and the impact it had on his life. From the level of commitment and volunteer hours Gary has given back to the school it is safe to say that Gary Walsh has made an impact on St. Bon's as well.

St. Bon's Alumnus Releases Book
Alumnus Leonard Lahey '60 is no stranger to transportation around this province. H is father, Raymond Lahey, and his uncle, Bill Lahey, spent their working lives as telegraph operators in the changing times of transportation in the province. They often told stories to Leonard about what it meant back in those days to travel in and around Newfoundland.

Leonard has compiled these tales into "Getting Around the Rock" a book of  stories of Trains, Boats, and Airplanes in Newfoundland.  From the "Newfie Bullet" to the SS Kyle to Amelia Earhart, "Getting Around the Rock"  is a fascinating history of the transportation sector, largely in pre-Confederation Newfoundland and Labrador.

Stories include:  How "The Bullet" Came to Newfoundland,  Wireless Telegraphy,  The Newfoundland Coastal Steamers,  Aviation History and the Newfoundland Connection,  The Botwood Seaplane Base,  Newfoundland Airport (Gander) and more.

Congratulations Leonard on this accomplishment.
Alumni Profiles: Kat McLevey '14
Music has often been a part of many students lives while studying at St. Bon's. There have been many alumni over the years that have an extraordinary talent for music. That is very evident in alumnus Kathleen (Kat) McLevey'14.

Since entering the vibrant music scene in her hometown of St. John's in 2012, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Kat McLevey has become one of Newfoundland and Labrador's most prestigious up-and-coming singer/ songwriters. She shows a depth well beyond her years, combining her strong sense of melody, articulate guitar playing and clever lyrical approach to create a style reminiscent of many, yet still all her own.

After graduating from St. Bon's in 2014 Kat received a scholarship to attend the world-renowned Berklee College of Music. Despite her young age  Kat has already garnered several impressive awards and reviews. Along with receiving a Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Award three years in a row, Kat placed 2nd in the national RBC Emerging Artist Mentorship Prize, 2nd place in the Statoil MusicNL Newfound Talent Contest, 1st place in the Statoil MusicNL Christmas Songwriting Contest for "Winter Shows Me."  You can watch the video for this song   here.

Kat teamed up with Canadian singer/ songwriter Ian Foster for the release of her debut EP, "Drifter", released in May, 2014. This release landed Kat a prestigious opening slot at the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, a feature interview and live performances on the nationally broadcasted "Absolutely Maritimes - HeavyWeather Special Volume 2," a distinguished performance at The Feast of Cohen: Leonard Cohen's 80th Birthday Bash" and much more.  Now Kat once again teamed up with producer Ian Foster for her much anticipated full-length release, Evergrown, released in August of 2015.

Kat will be performing at this year's newest concert festival Slabfest, an all-ages outdoor music festival featured on the historic old RCAF site (aka Old Town Site) in Gander, on June 25th.
