SEF extends a huge thank you to Trustees
Beth Little and
Nicole Plumbo, who are rotating off our Board next month. Beth has been a Trustee for 7 years, and in her tenure has served in numerous roles including Events Chair, Grants Review Chair, and
on the Grants Committee and Endowment Campaign Committee. Nicole, who served as a teacher representative on the board, has added much wisdom to our organization. Their combined many years of service have helped SEF to grow and thrive. Please join us in thanking them for all they have done for SEF!

Grant Evaluation Process
|
All grants submitted to SEF for consideration go through a rigorous evaluation process including review by the district administration, the SEF Grants Committee, and the SEF Board of Trustees. For a flow chart on how the process works, please click

Spring Grants Announced
SEF is pleased to announce 22 grants approved in May, totaling over $263,000. These grants bring SEF's total funding for the 2015-16 academic year to over $348,000. A sampling of the grants includes:
- Expanded course offerings for 11th & 12th grades through the "Virtual High School" program - $52,289 over two years
- Purchase of a high-quality automated telescope system and astronomical binoculars for the high school's Astronomy elective course - $3,639
- New adventure challenges, the Indoor Multi Swing and the outdoor Initiative Wall, for the high school PE department's Project Adventure curriculum - $17,000
- Peer Leadership Program for juniors and seniors - $10,005
- Hispanic and ELL Academic Outreach Coordinator for grades 6-12 - $130,000 over two years
- Continuation of the highly-successful CS First Computer Coding Club at LCJSMS - $2,953
- STEAM Carnival for grades K-5, with numerous hands-on science activities and demonstrations, including presentations by the Liberty Science Center and Playwell - $5,950
- "Makerspace" equipment for all five elementary school libraries to enable hands-on engineering and technology activities in conjunction with library research on inventors and computers - $5,895
- Battle of the Books, a team-based reading motivation program, at all five elementary schools - $2,475
- After-school instrument practice club at Jefferson School - $1,938
- Family Literacy Night pilot program at Lincoln-Hubbard School - $558
- "Even Small Crayons Make Bright Marks" assembly based on theme of inclusion and acceptance of differences for Washington School - $750
- "Treasure chest" of sensory tools for grades 1-5 at Franklin School - $6,254

SEF's 30th Anniversary
Many current and former SEF board members and friends gathered on April 21st to celebrate SEF's 30 years of grant-making to the Summit Public Schools. Jazz musicians from the Summit High School and Middle School performed at a reception, and SEF presented a ceremonial check to the Board of Education representing the $5,404,078 granted to the Summit schools since inception.Thank you to all of the SEF donors over the years who have helped make this milestone possible!
