IMPACT to serve as pilot site
for mental health screening

IMPACT has been selected as one of six pilot sites across the country to integrate a new mental health screening instrument into our Intoxicated Driver Program [IDP]assessment. IMPACT is the designated provider for Milwaukee County residents who are required to obtain an IDP assessment as part of the process to regain their driver's license after an Operating While Intoxicated conviction.

The CARS screen will be self-administered on a voluntary basis to IDP clients between June 1st and Septembers 30 immediately prior to their scheduled assessment with an IMPACT counselor.

The computer-guided interview incorporates a structured diagnostic mental health screening adapted from an internationally-validated instrument. Mental health problems that extend beyond substance abuse disorders are common and can affect treatment outcomes.

As a pilot site, IMPACT will provide valuable information for the standardization and implementation of the CARS screening tool nationwide.

Weather influences the types of services people seek from 2-1-1

Wisconsin weather can be a state of extremes: frigid cold in the winter and blistering hot in the summer. These elements often affect the types of requests - and the urgency of need - among 2-1-1 clients. As a result, we collaborate with other service providers and governmental agencies on initiatives that preserve personal safety during weather-related emergencies.

For example, IMPACT is a community partner with Milwaukee Country, Community Advocates and UMOS in helping low-income households access emergency furnace repair or replacement services; as well as apply for the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program. Those who meet the program requirements have the option of being able to schedule an appointment at an application site. Disabled or elderly individuals who have difficulty leaving their home are contacted by an agency directly.

Frigid temps tend to result in more requests for assistance getting a landlord to address conditions rendering dwellings unsafe, unsanitary or unhealthful for human habitation including issues with electrical, heating and plumbing. Among those individuals and families who were experiencing homelessness, IMPACT provided nearly 1,000 referrals to cold weather shelters or emergency warming centers.

IMPACT 2-1-1 ranks among the busiest 2-1-1

operations centers in the nation - helping Wisconsin boast the 12th largest system overall.

As part of an effort to encourage residents to access free preparation services and apply for tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit,
Milwaukee County Transit buses scrolled the message
"Need Tax Help? Call 2-1-1"
