A NIGHT (AND MORNING) TO REMEMBER
Celebrate! Remember! Fight Back!

Saturday, April 23 was a night filled with joy, tears, and laughter. 63 teams, over 650 team members, and countless supporters gathered at Hanapepe Soccer Field for Kauai's annual Relay for Life. The event raised over $212,250 to fight cancer.

The event gives Kauaians the opportunity to "celebrate" the lives of people who have battled cancer, "remember" loved ones lost, and "fight back" against the disease.

Leading the way for All Saints' were the members of the All Saints' Angels--led by the Ke Akua Youth Group and the Episcopal Church Women. The All Saints' Angels raised $7,155--a new record, eclipsing last year's record of $5,400.

This year's theme had an international twist with a "Paint Our World Purple" slogan. Each team was assigned a different country, and the All Saints' Angels were given Belgium! The Angels' Belgian root "beer" floats and chocolate waffle donuts were very popular with Relay participants and sold out early in the evening.

The powerful evening began with the Survivors Lap. During the Survivors' Lap, all cancer survivors at the event took the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while being cheered on by the other participants who lined the track. All Saints was represented by many courageous members of our 'Ohana who have triumphed over cancer.

The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark, so participants can remember people we have lost to cancer, honor people who have fought cancer in the past, and support those whose fight continues. Each year, prior to the candles being lit, a featured speaker shares their story about cancer's impact on their life. This year, the featured speakers were All Saints' very own Kirsten, Collin, Harper, and Paxton Darrell.

The Darrell's shared with the participants Harper's journey after being diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma--a rare malignant tumor involving muscle tissue. They talked about the difficult trips to Honolulu for chemo treatment and the impact Harper's journey had on the whole family. Kirsten is not only a caregiver and mother of a cancer survivor, but she is a cancer survivor herself. Harper is now cancer free and enjoying life as a typical 1st grade boy--playing outside, playing sports, taking music lessons and participating in Cub Scouts.

Following the Darrell's remarks, candles were lit inside personalized luminaries that were placed around the track as glowing tributes to those who have been affected by cancer.

As participants continued the walk throughout the night and into the morning, speakers encouraged participants to fight cancer year-round and to commit to saving lives.

Mahalo to everyone who participated in and donated to this incredibly successful Relay for Life event.

TELLING A LOVE STORY
Laundry Love to be Featured Tonight on PBS' Hiki Nō

This past fall, students from Kapaa Middle School, including All Saints' Raiden  Kurisu, created a short documentary film on Laundry Love Kauai. Raiden and his colleagues submitted the feature to Hiki Nō. Their feature was selected and will air Thursday, April 28 at 7:30PM (HST) on PBS and will be available on pbshawaii.org.

Hiki Nō
(which is the Hawaiian phrase for "Can Do") is a PBS Hawaii Learning Initiative that mentors middle and high schoolers from public, charter, and private schools throughout the state of Hawaii as they create PBS-quality video stories about themselves and their communities. Stories that meet PBS standards are compiled into a weekly half-hour program that airs statewide on PBS Hawaii and worldwide on pbshawaii.org.

Congratulations to Raiden and his classmates.  Thank you for telling the story of Laundry Love Kauai!
SATURDAY WORK DAYS

Making a Difference Every Month at All Saints'

The Buildings and Grounds Committee announced the next three months' Saturday workdays; May 21, June 25, and July 16
Saturday work days begin at 8:00AM and conclude no later than 12:00PM. Volunteers are not required to stay the whole time, but it is always helpful.

For May 21st, volunteers will pressure wash and refinish the Rectory's fence. In addition, there will be numerous tasks focused on cleaning, organizing, and beautifying the Church.

Saturday Workdays are vital to the stewardship and preservation of our All Saints' Campus. Our 'Ohana is blessed with a beautiful campus and numerous buildings. However, these amazing resources require a great deal of ongoing maintenance and preventative care. It is our call  and duty  to properly care for our Church home--not only for this generation; but, for many generations to come.

Benedictine spirituality teaches us that "work" is a form of prayer. Come pray with others each month through the labors of caring for All Saints'.  There are jobs for all ages and all abilities. Workdays can be a wonderful family-centered activity. We need the "power of our 'Ohana" to tackle the many vital jobs to make All Saints' shine for and in service to the Glory of God!
ROYAL BIRTHDAY
Any Excuse for a Party!

Just last week, April 21st, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 90th birthday. She has been Queen and Head of State for the past 64 years, coming to the throne on February 6th, 1952, just 25 years old, on the death of her father, King George VI.

Being the Monarch she has two "birthdays" to celebrate - her actual birthday on April 21st, and her "official" birthday which takes place this year on June 12th. The people in Britain will be celebrating on June 12th with street parties, the largest of which will take place on the Mall--the road which runs from Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square. Organizers are planning for 10,000 people to attend that one! That's one heck of a Pot Luck celebration!

We will be inviting our church 'Ohana and other friends to our house on Saturday, June 12th to celebrate this event Kaua'i style. Don't worry, we're not inviting 10,000 people!

So this is just a "heads-up"--or possibly a warning!!--and a more detailed invitation will follow closer to the date. We just wanted you to know in advance and ask you to save the date.

With warm aloha to all of our Church 'Ohana,

David and Bill
MILESTONE FOR ST. JOHN'S ELE'ELE (KAUA'I)
Happy 75th Anniversary!

On Sunday, May 1, St. John's Episcopal Church in Ele'ele (West Kaua'i) will celebrate its 75th anniversary. Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick will preside and preach at the special service.

Episcopal services were held on West Kauai as early as 1916. Although there was no Episcopal Church at that time, services were held first in the gardens of a private home in Kekaha, then in a screened porch in a plantation clubhouse.  Construction of St. John's Church in Ele'ele was completed in 1941, when they called their first vicar, John Thurlow Baker.

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary to our brothers and sisters at St. John's Ele'ele.
GALATIANS: LIVE BY THE SPIRIT
Summer Spiritual Education and Formation Program

At the beginning of Pentecost, All Saints' will host a six-part Bible Study and Sermon Series, "Live by the Spirit", based on Paul's Epistle to the Galatians.  Beginning on Tuesday, May 24, Father Ryan will facilitate a Bible study that will study the upcoming Sunday's reading from the Epistle. In addition, the group will consider the overall themes and  messages    of Paul's letter to the Church at Galatia. The group will also help to shape the sermon for Sunday.

The Bible study will be hosted at the Rectory from 6:30PM - 7:30PM in a comfortable, informal setting.  We are asking individuals to sign-up for the Bible study and (ideally) commit to attending  all   six of the studies and Sundays in the series. The Bible study will have a 12 person limit.

To sign-up, please click here   or use the sign-up sheet that is located at the entrance of the Church starting this Sunday.

May 1 PROCLAIMING (John 5:1-9)

Past sermons in the series:
April 3 BELIEVING (John 20:19-31)
