Simonton Cancer Center
Dear Friends....Welcome!
We've much to report, so lets get to it.

While we celebrate another birthday for SCC, we acknowledge with sadness the passing of a well-loved colleague. Many of you may have worked with Patricia in the past, either in a retreat, a training, or privately. She is sorely missed and we are grateful for her friendship and her many years at SCC.

As always, we want to Thank You! for helping us help others during their cancer journey.
In addition to our retreat programs, private work plays a big part in what we offer. This year is no exception and we have handled over a hundred crisis calls this quarter alone.

In this issue, we're excited to announce that the 'science of happiness' has now, truly, become a SCIENCE!
Please read and click below to see how this has happened and what we can expect.

Research:
New studies out of Miami, Florida, have once again confirmed what we already know.
But thyroid research out of Pennsylvania provide us with information we didn't.

Reminder: Getting Well Again Patient Program/ May 22-27, 2016

And we have taken our first (and soon to be second) steps in providing programing services for those clients where English is their second language.

We thank you for making us part of your life and supporting Dr. Simonton's work  into our 45th year this April! (where DOES the time go...yesterday I was 12 ;)

Blessings,

Karen Smith Simonton
Executive Director, SCC

The 'missing link' in cancer treatment.

Don't wait for that 'perfect' time to make changes or it may never happen.
Life is a journey and just like any road trip,
we all start at different destinations.

It is with deep sadness we announce the
passing of a beloved staff member,
Patricia Palmer, Ed.D.
Patricia had been one of our senior faculty at SCC, interning in the late 80's and working with SCC in the 90's. She returned to our teaching staff in late 2007.
In 2010 she became our Training Director until her departure in 2012. Intelligent, witty and compassionate, Patricia was a valuable therapist and a good friend to so many.
Her life was full. SCC sends our deepest condolences to her lovely- and much loved - family.
                 Blessings.
The Health and Happiness Project
Looking for the positive... finally.

ALERT!  We consider this a MAJOR break-through....for many reasons.
(and it doesn't really have anything to do with dogs....sorry)

The University of Miami and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (remember~ to be considered a comprehensive cancer center, you are required to offer some sort of support/counseling- thank you Dr. Simonton) have published a breast cancer study showing that the combination of meditation, stress management and cognitive therapy (belief work) can lower the rate of death from disease - any disease- significantly.
79%....... yes, you read that right.
75% lower risk of dying from breast cancer and (get this)
55% lower risk of recurrence.
The reason we feel this is so significant (besides the obvious...these women are living longer) is that SCC program opponents (you know who you are) have always stated that 'although research has shown there may be benefit for some of these components on their own, there is no evidence that combining them would be of benefit.' To which we've always said....."WHAT??!"  And although we certainly need to temper this with attachment to outcome, it's still something to cheer about.
Study consisted of 240 patients with a stage 0 to IIIB non-metastatic breast cancer, 2-10 weeks post surgery. Patients followed 6 months, 12 months, five years, eight years and twelve years after trial. Just 'cause you can't see it,
doesn't mean it's not there~

Just when you thought you knew it all.... In a stunning 2015 discovery that overturns decades of textbook teaching, researchers at the University of Virginia School of Medicine have determined that the brain is directly connected to the immune system by vessels previously thought to not exist. That such vessels could have escaped detection when the lymphatic system has been so thoroughly mapped throughout the body is surprising on it's own, but the true significance of the discovery lies in the effects it could have on the study and treatment of disease. The Thyroid.....the Body's Butterfly

Thyroid Cancer....
         well, maybe not...

Thyroid cancer has been increasing at an alarming rate in the past 20 -30 years,
partly due to early detection of indolent tumors (tumors too 'lazy' to develop or very slow to develop.) Even though these tumors are not considered dangerous, they are treated as aggressively as other types of thyroid cancer. A name change and re-classification is being led by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, due to 'over diagnosing'. This is expected to reduce the psychological and medical consequences of a cancer diagnosis, potentially affecting thousands of people worldwide. " I hope this sets an example for other expert groups to address nomenclature of various cancer types that have indolent behavior to prevent inappropriate and costly treatment," state senior investigator Yuri Nikiforov, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pathology and director of Pitt's Division of Molecular and Genomic Pathology.
