LAKE OF THE ISLES

LUTHERAN CHURCH

   MAY

   2016

Sunday, May 1st, Ascension Sunday
"Clap your hands, all you people; shout to God with a cry of joy.   God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of the ram's horn."                          Psalm 47: 1 & 5

Dear Friends of Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church,

Ascension Day is known in the Christian church as a moveable feast.  Although there is no set date or even month for the holy day, the 40th day of Easter which marks Jesus' heavenward journey, always falls on a Thursday.  In some traditions the day is known as Holy Thursday, while in other churches, it is known simply as Ascension Day. Unfortunately, it is often one of the most poorly attended midweek worship service.  In the last century, churches began setting aside either the Sunday before or after Holy Thursday to celebrate Christ's ascension to give it its proper respect.

In the Middle Ages, Ascension plays representing Christ's miraculous disappearance into the clouds, often accompanied the Holy Thursday church services. The special services began simply as processions reminding the faithful of Jesus' walking with his outside the Jerusalem's city walls to the the village of Bethany. As the tradition of processions spread, people began to add dramatic details.  Many congregations concluded their processions by reenacting Christ's ascension. Worshipers sometimes accomplished this feat by tying ropes around a statue of Jesus and hoisting it through a hole in the church roof. A historic document described one such ceremony that took place in a monastery in Bavaria. The writer marveled that as the statue of Jesus ascended towards the roof of the church angels descended to escort the rising Christ into heaven. These angels, played by costumed choir boys suspended from the ceiling by means of ropes, who met Christ as he neared the clouds, which were represented by draperies of silk around the opening in the roof. After the statue of Jesus disappeared into the clouds a sudden shower of lilies, roses, other flowers, and communion wafers dropped from the roof to the disciples waiting below.

On Sunday May 1st, we will celebrate a festive Ascension Day worship service with music by Dietrich Buxtehude.    Mischa Santora, the Artistic Director of the Minneapolis Music Company and the former associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra will conduct the English language premier of Buxtehude's cantata "Man singet mit Freuden" based on Psalm 118, "There is a sound of exultation and victory in the tents of the righteous." An ensemble of strings, brass and timpani will accompany the choir.

There will be no statues carried up through the ceiling, but eco-friendly dove shaped balloons will be sent skyward by the Sunday School children.

Please join us for this special Ascension Sunday worship service.  (And remember your M&M containers.)

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

MOTHER'S DAY AND FLOWER BOMBING
SUNDAY, MAY 8TH

While walking the pilgrim trail of El Camino de Santiago in Spain, David Cook marveled at the 500 miles of sunflowers. They faced the sun and they were like humans.  Their almost human faces inspired to create his own unique art form- "flower bombing."  They came to life in his head , as he stayed up all night for four days in a row, painting flowers manically.  That is the genesis of his work that will be installed for our Mother's Day worship service on May 8th at Lake of the Isles.  Join us and experience the color of Minnesota artist David Cook, the Flower Bomber.

PENTECOST SUNDAY
(Wear Red)
MAY 15TH
According to the Book of the Apostles, on the 50th day of Easter known in the  ancient Greek world as Pentecost, God sent his Spirit upon the disciples.  They had gathered in prayer and thanksgiving after Christ's ascension into heaven wondering when God would send them a clear vision for the church.  On that Pentecost Day, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples, and the spirit appeared upon their heads like tongues of fire.  This is the day we celebrate as the birth of the Christian Church and its mission to proclaim the good news of Jesus the Savior to the whole world.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS FOR MAY

Sunday School Service Day - May 1

Sunday School children will make sandwiches for the homeless during Sunday School.  After worship, the  congregation is invited to join Sunday School families assembling birthday gift bags after the balloon release outside. This service project supports the Cheerful Givers organization which is a nonprofit organization committed to helping low/no income parents recognize and celebrate their children.  The birthday gift bags will go to shelters and food shelves to economically challenged parents so that they can give their child a birthday gift.

How can you help?
Offerings
If you brought home an M&M container, please bring it back to church filled with money.   If you haven't had the chance to bring home a container, we don't want you to miss out - just simply bring your offering of money and designate it for the Sunday School service day.  Offerings will be used to purchase supplies for both service projects.

Birthday Gifts
Go shopping and select birthday gift items to put in the gift bags.  Bring the  unwrapped  gifts to church this Sunday, May 1.  Collection boxes are in Fellowship Hall, sorted by age group (0-2 yr olds, preschool, elementary, tweens/teens).  Please remove all price tags and any extra tags to have the donations "gift ready" (but do not wrap the gift - they are going in gift bags)

It will be a busy morning and extra helping and guiding hands are needed.   Please click on the signup genius link form to find out how you can support this event:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e44a9a78-sunday
