10 WAYS TO A BETTER CONVERSATION
|
As a radio host,
Celeste Headlee
talks, and listens, for a living. She knows the value of a good conversation. The problem, though, is our ability to effectively converse with one another might be in the process of being
devalued
. According to a 2015 study by Pew Research, Americans have never been more divided. We're less likely to compromise, Headlee says, because we're not listening to each other.
We are also increasingly more reliant on communicating without actually talking. A high school teacher wrote in The Atlantic that "conversational competence
might be the single most overlooked skill we fail to teach."
In her much-talked-about TED Talk, with nearly 3 million views, Headlee shares 10 ways we can reverse this trend, and get back to having conversations with meaning, ones that matter. She also gives us this takeaway: "Go out, talk to people, listen to people and, most importantly, be prepared to be amazed."

In his book T
he Behavior Gap,
Richards wrote: "There is a growing recognition that great conversations about money are really great conversations about life. ... Saving, budgeting, investing, tax planning, insurance and estate planning should be related to the larger context of your life, your goals, and your values.
One of the most important things I can do when faced with a financial decision is to talk to someone I trust: a friend, a family member or a paid professional. Start talking to people you trust about questions that matter to you."
Yet, for all the value that can come from talking about money, there are times when
not
talking can have even more benefit. Richards, the director of investor education for the BAM ALLIANCE, explains in these articles:

Quality conversations can help break down barriers, improve relationships, uncover true feelings and foster creativity. Psychology Today takes a look at some of the positive ripple effects that can come from improving the quality of our conversations in the following scenarios:

"The difference between listening and pretending to listen, I discovered, is enormous. One is fluid, the other is rigid. One is alive, the other is stuffed. Eventually, I found a radical way of thinking about listening. Real listening is a willingness to let the other person change you."
