NEWS & EVENTS
To the PIC Community,

On Wednesday morning, March 23, new PIC Chair Ken Montgomery hosted eleven Private Industry Council members, newly appointed by Mayor Martin J Walsh, for an orientation breakfast at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. These new leaders, companies, and organizations are bringing new energy and perspective to the PIC. Important responsibilities lie ahead, such as the process of chartering career centers under the new Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act To see a full list of the current PIC Board and Council, click here

Meanwhile, April vacation week gave the PIC school-to-career staff a moment to catch its breath before moving thousands of Boston public high school students toward summer jobs and internship opportunities - though, as you will read below, many career specialists spent school vacation days in the woods at Hale Reservation in Westwood, preparing students for summer assignments at day camps and other youth development programs.

In this edition of the PIC quarterly e-newsletter, you will find information about the following:

Teen Leadership Institute Teenleadership
Last week, 227 high school students from 30 Boston public high schools spent part of their April vacation in the woods at Hale Reservation in Westwood, learning leadership and job skills they will use in their roles as camp counselors this summer. Experienced youth development professionals worked with students on creating a positive camp culture, behavior management, and being noticed for the right reasons. The students also participated in mock interviews and learned to trust one another on the ropes course. CPR training will follow on Saturdays in May at the PIC office in Jamaica Plain.

Now in its fourth year, the Teen Leadership Institute is a collaboration between the Boston Private Industry Council, the Summer Fund, and Hale Reservation, generously supported by Bank of America.

Skilled Careers in Life Sciences (SCILS)SCILS
The Skilled Careers In Life Sciences (SCILS) Initiative - led by the PIC and the Mayor's Office of Workforce Development - supports occupational training at colleges and universities, on-the-job learning at local businesses, and the recruitment, career guidance, and placement of eligible participants into the workforce once their training is complete.

In October, the SCILS consortium met at Quincy College for its quarterly meeting and to take a tour of two of the college's new laboratories. SCILS sponsors five to ten students at the college every year. Read more about SCILS and the new Quincy College laboratories in this Patriot Ledger article.

The April SCILS consortium was held in Lexington at Shire, the state's fastest growing drug maker.  For more information about the SCILS Initiative, contact Carlos Arzeno, SCILS Project Manager, at (617) 488-1318 or [email protected].
