Two ELCA students are members of the People to People
Leadership Ambassador Program
Class of 2015!
On Back to School Day, sophomores, CJ Goolsby and Kai Evans discovered they have a lot more in common than being sophomores who share a class or two. They both were nominated and selected to participate in a
People to
People Leadership Ambassador Program
in July.
People to
People
provides students with an opportunity to make personal connections with other like-minded students as well as people from other cultures. The
hands-on experiences make for a true global understanding and the development of leadership skills.
While each of the boys' trips were very different, there were some similarities as well.
CJ traveled to England, Ireland and Wales for a two-week study abroad program and Kai participated in an 11-day Leadership Summit: Medicine and Health Care educational travel program to Johns Hopkins University. Students are accepted into People to People programs after being nominated for participation. Through these AdvanceED acredited programs, students may earn class hours on their high school transcript.
Prior to his trip, CJ had the opportunity to briefly meet the other trip participants in the group of approximately 40 students. Kai, however, had never met any of the 300 students who would become his travel companions. Participants are virtual strangers before their departure, but both boys say they are still in contact with several of the friends they made through this opportunity.
"This was a great experience...it took me out of my comfort zone but it was a great way to experience new cultures and it helped me to appreciate what I have here because a lot of people don't have the same luxuries as we do," said CJ, who aspires to be a high school teacher. "I think there should be more male teachers and I want to impact others and be a good male role model."

Kai admits that, at first, he really wasn't "up for" the experience. "I had already attended the 2013 Leadership Summit at Harvard in Boston and had a lot of fun, but I thought this program centered around medicine would be boring," stated Kai. "But I had a great time and had fun with a great group of kids." Kai described that students were divided into groups based on fields of work. "I've been interested in the human brain since I was 12 years old. My dad is a psychiatrist, which is interesting, and I went to camp thinking I would like to follow my dad's path. I chose to be in the group focusing on neurology and that is what I see myself studying after high school."
When asked about the challenges to traveling alone at such a young age, especially out of the US, CJ said, "My biggest challenge was managing my money and time. The exchange rate on currency can be tricky and I had to make sure I was up and ready on time so I wouldn't miss breakfast." Kai agreed, "Money management was a challenge for me, also."
We are extremely proud of these boys for their accomplishments and for their ambition in venturing out and learning new things!

The first Elementary Mental Math Challenge was held on Thursday, August 27, 2015. It was an exciting and intense competition. The students are amazing! The next challenge will be on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at 2:00. We challenge you to come and try to mentally compute numbers as fast as the third, fourth, and fifth grade students. We're having a PANTS PARTY!
Have you ever shopped at the uniform re-sale and found that many of the pants' size tags have faded or are missing? You can help with the solution! Volunteers are needed to help label uniform pants for the upcoming uniform re-sale. Please join Ellie Gogins on
Monday, September 28 at 8:15AM to dive in and conquer the challenge.
Please don't forget to donate any gently used uniform items for the upcoming uniform re-sale. Make sure items are in good condition and are ELCA approved. Drop off items any time to Vicki Martin at the main receptionist's desk.

A BIG Thank You to all of our ELCA Families, Faculty, and Staff who gave to the All In In 10 ELCA Fund Blitz! Over $187,000 has been given or pledged so far to the 2015/2016 ELCA Fund Campaign! Our Current Parent participation rate is at 44% and our faculty and staff is at 97%. Our donors enjoyed a wonderful time of celebration and fellowship last Friday during the annual Tailgate Tradition Donor Appreciation Dinner catered by Jim N Nicks. We will continue to reach out to the remaining school families and staff as we approach the year-end giving season.
