Parade of Nations
October is Missions Month at ELCA
The Annual Parade of Nations took place on Friday, October 31 as the finale of Missions Month. The entire elementary school had mission-focused lessons about different countries and then dressed in the cultural fashion for those countries for the parade.

Our Favorite Community Helpers!

October was Community Helper month for the K3 and K4 students.  Our month began with Mr. Hylkema, our favorite bus driver, taking the Preschoolers on an "On-Campus" field trip! Next, Mr. Carrigan brought Teco, his canine partner, to visit each classroom and share what it is like being a policeman with a dog for a partner.  Zyon Bowen's daddy who is a Policeman, brought his Police motorcycle and shared with us what he does to keep people safe.  He even let us sit on his motorcycle!  Our next Community Helper to visit was the Fire House and units from Station Three.  We got to learn how to get out of a house safely, see what a fireman looks like all dressed up to rescue us from a burning fire, and see an ambulance and fire engine up close!  Officer Mike gave us a special visit and talked about his job at school and in the county keeping people safe!  We even got to see inside his police car!  Chef Joe and Chef Jonas of Sage Dining in our school helped us decorate cookies while they talked to us about cooking and being a chef.  We wrapped our Community Helper month up with a Community Helper Parade where each child dressed up as their favorite Community Helper.  We had a great time learning and are so blessed to have such great Community Helpers!!

Governors Honors Program
State Level Nominees

Stephen Blackburn, Chloe Slafka and Callan Russell were selected to represent Eagle's Landing Christian Academy at the State Round of the Governors Honors Program. Only three students from ELCA were selected to advance to the final round. We are very honored that these students were selected to represent ELCA in the areas of Theater, Dance and Instrumental Music.

Each of these students will submit a state level application on December 5 and hope to proceed as a semifinalist in the state competition. Best of luck to you all!

Congratulations to our
President's List and Honor Roll Students!

This year's Instructional Technology department is preparing both students and staff for the technology needs of the 21st century classroom. Thank you for supporting the ELCA Fund and the PTF from which funds were gained to support many of these projects and tools. Read more.

Students! Did you know about the K-12 Student Technology Resources webpage found on the ELCA Website? It may be found under the Student tab or via link below.

www.elcaonline.org/techresources

This webpage brings into one place the tools that students are using in the classroom and for homework assignments. It also provides tools and applications to assist in remediation and enrichment.  It will be continuously updated, so check it often.  Students are welcome to also submit suggestions for the webpage through the web form located at the bottom of the webpage.

It's the Most Wonderful Time...

The PTF Christmas Shoppe is coming in December! This year is sure to be a hit with a lot of new items as well as free gift wrapping. Make plans to stop by the elementary library and shop December 2-5. There will be a variety of Christmas gifts for children and adults of all ages.

There will also be a "mini" uniform resale during the Shoppe.

Support ELCA & Save on Your Taxes

Georgia GOAL

Did you know that in 2008 the Georgia General Assembly passed a law that allows both individuals and corporations to re-direct their Georgia tax dollars? Taxes that you owe to the State of Georgia may be re-directed to the Georgia Goal Scholarship Program to support the private or Christian school of your choice. These funds are used to assist families with a demonstrated financial need to attend or remain at ELCA. The law also provides families the opportunity to gain a tax benefit on federal taxes. Would you join other ELCA families who are already choosing to re-direct their tax dollars contributing to Georgia GOAL? Reservations are being taken now for 2015 and it is anticipated that each of these credits will be claimed by mid-DecemberPlease contact ELCA Director of Development, Al Hosfordat (678)818-1031 to learn more about this program.

A small shoebox can have a big impact. What goes into the box is fun, but what comes out of it is eternal. Be a part of changing children's lives all over the world in Jesus' Name through the power of a simple gift with Operation Christmas Child.

The ministries of ELCA and Eagle's Landing First Baptist Church have set a very challenging goal of collecting 5000 shoeboxes this year. The November 17 deadline is quickly approaching. Won't you be a part of this ministry of blessing others with the love of Christ?

ELEMENTARY CHORUS NEWS

The 4th grade performance of "Rock Solid" on October 29 was a musical about God's promises for our 'trail of life'.  It reminded us that every day is an adventure...sometimes our trail is exciting and fun, but sometimes it may be scary, confusing, and difficult.  The great thing is that God will walk with us through this life, forever leading and guiding us, if we let Him.

Zoe Purcaro was our "Ranger" who started our 2 teams on their trail to the top of the Summit.  The "Yellow Team" consisted of Caity Patterson, Jake Lankie, Allison Simmons, and Charlie Gilliam.  The "Camo Team" members were Colton Hood, Jesse Pinder, Miller Doerr, and Sara Cauble.  While on the trail, our "Yellow Team" had an encounter with a bear...a "Chicago Bear" played by Brandon Wiggins.

Twenty students had speaking parts and sixteen students had singing parts in the program.  They all did a wonderful job!  We give God all the glory for their wonderful gifts and talents that these students use to tell others about Christ and for being a Christian example.

  • 2nd grade students will be presenting a musical program on Wednesday, November 19 (during Elementary Chapel time); 1:45-2:30.  The title of the program is, "God So Loved the World".
  • K3, K4, & K5 student will be presenting a Christmas program on Wednesday, December 17 (during pre-school Chapel time); 8:15-8:45.  The title of the program is, "Call Him Jesus".
  • 5th grade Chorus members will be presenting a Christmas program on Wednesday, December, 17 (during Elementary Chapel time); 1:45-2:30.  The title of the program is, "Out of the Box".

Belle Divine (4th grade member of the Young Charger Chorale) competed in the North Dekalb Music Teachers Association's 2014 Bach Competition on Saturday, October 11th at Georgia State University. She won first place in the elementary harp division. She performed Minuet in G by J.S. Bach on Sunday, October 12th at the Winners Recital at Piano Works.

She has been playing the harp for 3.5 years under the instruction of Susan Bennett Brady, principal harpist for the Atlanta Opera.

Middle School Leaders

On October 15, nineteen middle school students (advisory representatives) attended the ACSI Leadership Conference. The speaker was Jody Shelton, HS youth pastor from Cross Pointe Church in Duluth.

The Theme was Step Up: Eight Epic Principles of Leadership taken from the study of Nehemiah.

1)      IDENTIFY YOUR CALLING

2)      PRAY FOR EVERYTHING

3)      DELEGATE AND MOTIVATE

4)      LEAD BY EXAMPLE

5)      RESIST OPPOSITION

6)      DECIDE AND ACT

7)      SERVE

8)      DEPEND ON THE LORD

The students heard a speaker on leadership throughout the day, then met as a school to make plans on how they can serve and lead others to serve this school year. Their decision was to create a "Kindness Campaign" to carry out in the middle school later this fall, then to visit Regency House Assisted Living next semester.

Above: Baileigh Moore shares the Advisory Representatives' final plans of the school year while at the conference.

What's Cookin' in Algebra Class?

"Chef" Jordan Pinder is cooking as part of a project for Ms. Lewis' Algebra class. That's fun and yummy learning!

Students Connect with College Representatives

With 44 colleges represented, the NACCAP College Fair held on October 21 saw over 600 people in attendance.  Along with parents and high school students from other campuses, ELCA students were able to talk with representatives from colleges from as far away as Colorado, Indiana, California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio in addition to universities in Georgia.

The college fair gave students exposure to colleges they may not have been familiar with.  Students discovered schools with state-of-the-art research labs, schools with faculty holding credentials that rival any public or private university, schools that have award winning graphic arts departments and outstanding fine art programs.  Students also discovered that many Christian colleges offer the same majors as many state universities while supporting an atmosphere where their beliefs and values are not only respected but encouraged.
