Firefighters can do more to protect themselves from getting occupational-related cancer, the Boston Fire Department preaches in a new video aimed at raising awareness and curbing deaths.
"We made this a priority," Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn said in an interview with the Globe, "because of skyrocketing cancer rates within the department and the need for us to take some proactive steps to try to mitigate some of these cancers."

SURGE OF CAL FIRE FIREFIGHTERS HIRED TO PREVENT WILDFIRE

With spring now taking hold in California, CAL FIRE is already staffing up for fire season, while focusing the efforts of its crews on preventing large and damaging wildfires. Recent rains have been a welcome sight to drought parched California, but CAL FIRE firefighters are not letting their guard down, instead they are training for another potential busy fire season and working hard to prevent wildfires. Across the State, CAL FIRE has already hired a surge of over 400 additional seasonal firefighters, whose focus includes fire prevention, fuel reduction and defensible space programs.

CONGRESS CONSIDERS ESTABLISHING A FIRE FIGHTER CANCER REGISTRY

In a rare display of bipartisanship, members from both sides of the aisle in Congress have joined ranks to press for the establishment of a national cancer registry specifically for fire fighters. Representatives Richard Hanna (R-NY) and Bill
Pascrell (D-NJ) have introduced H.R. 4625, the
Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, to establish such a registry. Identical legislation, S. 2799, has been introduced in the Senate by Senators Robert
Menendez (D-NJ) and Lisa
Murkowski (R-AK). The new legislation would allow novel research on cancer in fire fighters by providing scientists with new data.
