STATE BOE APPROVES TIFT
AS CHARTER SCHOOL SYSTEM
LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL HAVE MORE FLEXIBILITY
By FRANK SAYLES JR.
Tifton Grapevine
The
State Board of Education on
Thursday approved the
Tift County School System as a
Georgia Charter System.
According to the
State BOE, a
charter system is a local school district that operates under the terms of a charter between the State Board of Education and the local district, which receives flexibility from certain state rules and regulations in exchange for greater accountability. There is an emphasis on school-based leadership and decision-making.
"It's my understanding our board has to approve it in our board meeting on Tuesday," Tift County Schools' spokesman
Stacey Beckham told the
Tifton Grapevine on
Thursday following the
state approval.
"A primary impetus for our seeking charter system status is to
improve student performance significantly through the implementation of strategies that are currently constrained by state statute and/or State Board of Education rule," the
Tift School System wrote in its application to the state.
As part of a
five-year charter plan, the
Tift School System intends to implement numerous programs designed to increase student achievement; among them:
- alternative student groupings and instructional strategies;
- a restructured school day and possible extended school day or year;
- learner profiles and personalized learning plans to ensure that the educational needs, skills and interests of students are incorporated into the instructional program; and
- creation of a competency and project-based curriculum that is flexibly paced, emphasizing 21st century skills and accommodating students' individual needs.
"This new development signifies
great strides in educational innovation for every student in the
Tift County School District," said Lt. Gov.
Casey Cagle on
Thursday.
"Our
charter systems nurture an environment that
allows students to pursue a career path that is
intellectually stimulating while giving them the
tools to gain employment in their desired field upon graduation," Cagle said.
"This is an
exciting time
for
Tift County
, and I look forward to the
great opportunities
that the teachers, students, parents and community are sure to experience
thanks to this charter approval

IN NATIONAL MAIN STREET CONTEST
The national small business movement, "Independent We Stand," announces that the
Downtown Development Authority of the City of Tifton has been named a
quarterfinalist for the 2016 Independent We Stand "
America's Main Streets
" contest --
one step closer to winning the grand prize of $25,000 for downtown.
Of 150,000 votes and 253 cities who were nominated, Tifton's Downtown was selected as one of 25 quarterfinalists. This next round of voting is

The voting continues through May 29. You may vote once every 24 hours.

the
George P. Donaldson Award for the top associate degree graduate.
Arriaga has been involved with the ABAC Ambassadors, where she held roles as both vice president and secretary.
Active in a number of campus clubs, Arriaga has a grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in 2016.
As a dual-enrolled student in both high school and college, Vagott received his college degree before getting his Northside High School diploma in Warner Robins later this month. He was living on the ABAC campus at 16 years old and quickly adapted to college life.
"My experience at ABAC has been a unique one," Vagott said. "When I got accepted to ABAC, I had to convince my family that it was best for me to go ahead and go to college, even though I would be the only dual-enrolled student living on campus. Getting accepted into the Honors Program helped tremendously in convincing my family."
In his two years at ABAC, Vagott has been a member of the Honors Program, was named senator for the School of Science and Mathematics for the Student Government Association, and was a member of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Club.
Academically, Vagott is an Honors Program graduate who made the Dean's List three times. He graduated with a GPA of 3.80.
A total of
289 graduates received their diplomas in the Gressette Gymnasium ceremony.
