May 5, 2016 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Seventh Sunday of Easter.

Rev. Ellen will celebrate and David Jackson will preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Season of Easter

The Easter Season lasts until Pentecost Sunday, which will fall on May 15 this year.

The vestments and altar cloth during the Easter season are white, signifying the joy of Christ's resurrection. Two symbols for Easter are the Paschal Candle and holy water, which represent the light and new life of Christ's resurrection and the water of our baptism and rebirth.

From Rev. Ellen

Transformations...

Ellen Ekevag
Dear Friends,
There are exciting things afoot for our Emmanuel Kids.  On Sunday, May 15th, we will be unveiling two things.  The first is a re-designed soft space for children 5 years old and under.  Secondly, we will be unveiling Emmanuel Church activity binders for all our kids age 6 years old and up.

Once you "graduate" from the soft space you will be given a binder with your name on it and inside will be activities on the theme of the day, markers, crayons, and a fruit snack.  Yes, I said a fruit snack!  These binders will be in the back of the church in our new binder bookcases.  We will ask the kids to return them there at the end of the service so they can be refilled and a new fruit snack placed within.

Until then you will begin to see the transformation of these spaces.  Please be patient with us as this transformation occurs.    I hope you are as excited as I am!

Peace, Ellen+

Musicale
Music Lovers, you are invited to a Mom's Day Eve Musicale

Place: Emmanuel Episcopal Church
Date/Time: Saturday, May 7 @ 7pm

Come treat mom (or just you and your friends)
Cellist Steven Sigurdson
to an amazing evening of solo cello music that she'll (and you'll) absolutely love. And don't worry - mom will not say, "But it's Mothers Day!" because it's NOT!  All proceeds from this outstanding performance will benefit the Kensington Arts Center - a dynamic setting adjacent to Emmanuel Episcopal Church that promises to bring the entire community together with outstanding arts education for all ages and levels. Suggested donation: $20.

The May 7th program will be comprised of the first three Suites for Unaccompanied Cello by J.S. Bach. A brief reception with cellist Steven Sigurdson will follow his performance. Sigurdson, a Juilliard graduate, was raised in the La Grange area, and he currently resides here with his wife and son as he continues his vibrant performing and teaching career.

Remember: Everything's better with Bach cello suites!

See you on May 7th!

DAVID E. WEAVER IV MEMORIAL FUND

As June quickly approaches, our thoughts turn
to the David E. Weaver IV Memorial Fund.  For those of you newer to our congregation, David E. Weaver IV was the son of our former Rector David E. Weaver III, and his wife Sally. As his Dad was with us for 20 years, David grew up in our community. He was an amazing young man.  He passed away in 2003 and this Memorial Fund was established in his memory.

The committee met recently to choose this year's recipients. All are organizations benefiting the youth of the greater La Grange area. David was committed to social justice and improving the lives of young people. We will celebrate and honor his life on Trinity Sunday May, 22nd. The free will offering will be for this purpose.  Checks with notation on the memo line are welcome as well. Thank you to all who contribute to this very special effort.

The Ascension of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Feast Day: May 5, 2016

The Ascension of Jesus is the Christian teaching found in the New Testament that the resurrected Jesus was taken up to Heaven in his resurrected body, in the presence of eleven of his apostles, occurring 40 days after the resurrection. In the biblical narrative, an angel tells the watching disciples that Jesus' second coming will take place in the same manner as his ascension.

The ascension of Jesus is professed in the Nicene Creed and in the Apostles' Creed. The ascension implies Jesus' humanity being taken into Heaven. The Feast of the Ascension, celebrated on the 40th day of Easter (always a Thursday), is one of the chief feasts of the Christian year. The feast dates back at least to the later 4th century, as is widely attested. The ascension is one of the five major milestones in the gospel narrative of the life of Jesus, the others being baptism, transfiguration, crucifixion, and resurrection.

By the 6th century the iconography of the ascension in Christian art had been established and by the 9th century ascension scenes were being depicted on domes of churches. The ascending Jesus is often shown blessing with his right hand - directed towards the earthly group below him and signifying that he is blessing the entire Church.

WISH LIST

A 32-42 Inch flat screen Television

Thinking of replacing your 32-42 inch (or larger) flat screen? Consider donating it to Emmanuel. We are looking for some TVs for formation and informational use.

If you have one please contact the office or talk to Ellen+

We are in the process of hiring a new church sexton.  Until that happens be aware that you may not have everything set up as you normally would.  We are going to need everyone's help to pitch in and throw away trash if you see it and report any major concerns to the church office.

If you have time and would like to help please let Judy know.  This will be a learning curve for all of us. So I'm praying for patience, cooperation, and a great new sexton to come our way.

Emmanuel's Garage Sale

Start holding items for this year's Emmanuel Garage Sale Garage Sale!  We will be having our garage sale in late August.  Parishioners are asked to start saving items and bringing them to the church starting in July, due to space being used for classes before that time. If you need to bring anything before July, you can put it in the nursery.

If you need someone to pick up any items, please contact the church office or Penny Longo at (708) 275-5028.  We need everyone's help to make this year's garage sale a big success!
