We also acknowledge our nursing students, who are working diligently to earn   their degrees, so they too, can make a positive mark on the health care workforce. State of the School Address Celebrates Accomplishments and Looks to the Future
Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and special guests assembled at UMSON on April 7 for Dean Jane Kirschling's second annual State of the School address. The presentation, "Transforming Nursing: Living Our Core Values," highlighted how the School is responding to some of the significant challenges facing nursing, while maintaining the core values of UMB and the School of Nursing. Pledge on Opioid Education Announced at White House
UMSON has committed to educating its advanced practice registered nursing students on the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, as part of academic nursing's ongoing efforts to combat prescription drug and opioid abuse across the nation. This commitment was featured as part of the White House Champions of Change event on Advancing Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery. Katherine Fornili, MPH, RN, CARN, assistant professor, represented UMSON at the event, which was held Friday, April 29. 2016 Interprofessional Patient Management Competition
UMSON students joined students from medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, law, social work, and dentistry for the 2016 Interprofessional Patient Management Competition, sponsored by the School of Pharmacy's Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The competition, held in mid-April, consisted of oral and written presentations. First prize went to Team A, which included Daniel Herring, Nurse Anesthesia DNP Specialty student. Second prize went to Team C, which included Richard Power, BSN student. And third prize went to Team E, which included Sawyer Spurry, CNL student. See more photos.
Call for Applications for NLI's Leadership Development Program
UMSON's Nurse Leadership Institute (NLI) is now accepting applications for its 2016-2017 Leadership Development Program. Nurses from Maryland schools of nursing, hospitals, and other health care systems may apply to become fellows in a year-long leadership development program. Applications are due Monday, June 20. SUPER Hosts Engaging Events
Students United for Policy, Education and Research (SUPER) hosted a naloxone training and certification event on Monday, March 28. In the well attended session, attendees learned how to identify the signs of an opioid overdose and became certified to administer naloxone. Then, on Tuesday, April 26, SUPER  invited Gabriel Auteri, deputy chief of staff for Dr. Leana Wen, Commissioner of Health, Baltimore City, to speak at a women's health event. Auteri addressed women's health issues in Baltimore City and hosted a question-and-answer session. 
Welcome New Staff
Linda Atila has joined the Office of Student and Academic Services as an office manager. Prior to joining UMSON, Linda served as program coordinator and administrative coordinator at Johns Hopkins University. Linda holds a bachelor's degree in business management from Kaplan University and a master's degree in gerontology from Towson University. 

Ayamba Ayuk has joined the Office of Administrative Services as an administrative assistant II. Ayamba comes to UMSON from the Krieger Eye Institute where she served as a medical administrative assistant. She has also served as operations manager at DC Prep and Kipp Philadelphia Elementary Academy. Ayamba is working toward the completion of her Bachelor of Science degree in behavioral health. 

Mishawn Smith has joined UMSON as executive administrative assistant I supporting Associate Deans Jeffrey Ash and Bill Gardiner. Prior to the School of Nursing, Mishawn served as an administrative assistant III in the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She will receive her bachelor's degree in legal studies in May 2016.

Heather Gable, DNP '14, MS '04, BSN '02, chair of the Frostburg State University's Department of Nursing and associate professor, has been awarded the Regent's Faculty Award in Teaching, the highest honor that the University System of Maryland Board of Regents bestows to recognize exemplary faculty achievement. She was honored at the April 15 meeting of the board.
Elizabeth "Liz" Ness, MS '93, received the Distinguished Alumni Award at Alumni Reunion 2016. The annual award honors an alumnus for their dedication to excellence and exceptional professional achievements. Ness is the immediate past president of the UMSON Alumni Association and has been a nursing professional for 35 years.

Alumni Return to Baltimore for Reunion 2016
More than 100 UMSON alumni from DIN and BSN classes ending in "1" or "6" and graduates who earned a master's degree through the Clinical Nurse Leader program celebrated their reunion years on April 16 at the School of Nursing. Alumni Association President Christine Shippen, MS '98, BSN '73, served as emcee for the program that included a presentation of UMSON highlights by Dean Jane Kirschling, the induction of the Class of 1966 into the Heritage Class and the presentation of the Distinguished Alumni Award to Elizabeth "Liz" Ness, MS '93. Sawyer Spurry, MS Class of 2017, shared his inspiration for choosing nursing and the importance of the scholarship he received from UMSON. Karen McQuillan, MS '86, BSN '81, RN, delivered an inspiring lecture on "Courageous Care."
Class of 1966 Receives Service Award
Representatives for the UMSON Class of 1966 received the University of Maryland Baltimore Foundation, Inc. 2015 Distinguished Service Award at Alumni Reunion 2016. The award  was presented in recognition of their volunteer efforts to raise more than $58,000 toward the Class of 1966 Endowed Scholarship.

School of Nursing Seeking Adjunct Professors and Preceptors
UMSON is seeking adjunct faculty members and preceptors. The School hires adjunct faculty members to provide clinical instruction to entry-level students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and the Clinical Nurse Leader master's option. UMSON is also seeking skilled, experienced preceptors to work with students as they complete their clinical requirements. Learn more.

Docents Needed for Living History Museum
The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such as school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Scheduling is flexible. Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, associate professor, had her study, "Vasopressin Boots Placebo Analgesic Effects in Women: A Randomized Trial," featured in a Biology Psychiatry press release. Read the press release.

Luana Colloca, MD, PhD, associate professor, was awarded a four-year, $2,132,372 grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health, for the research project, "Chronic Orofacial Pain: Genetics, Cognitive-Emotional Factors, and Endogenous Modulatory Systems." Read more.

Jane Lipscomb, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, served on a panel of VIP judges in the Youth Violence Prevention Week Art Against Violence Contest and Gallery Show on April 6. Students from Baltimore City schools submitted artwork inspired by the theme "Art Against Violence." 

Shannon Idzik, DNP '10, MS, '03, CRNP, FAANP, associate professor, has been elected treasurer of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties. She will serve a two-year term. Read more.

Veronica Njie-Carr, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, FWACN, assistant professor, and Ronald Piscotty, PhD, RN-BC, assistant professor, were selected as recipients of the Dean's Research Scholars Award for fall 2016. The two-year award allows recipients to devote additional time to their research under the mentorship of a faculty member.
