Raising Awareness about Children's Mental Health

Mental health disorders among children are an important public health issue because of their prevalence, early onset, and impact on the child, family, and community. One in five children ages 13-18 have a mental health illness, such as anxiety, depression, autism, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

For many children with mental illness, schools provide important educational supports, stability, and the opportunity to link to mental health care. Through partnerships with Baltimore City Public Schools, BHSB works to ensure that children have access to high-quality services that promote optimal social-

emotional health and academic success. School mental health services are offered in 120 of 186 schools, providing individual treatment to over 5,000 children and youth annually.

Behavioral health service providers in early childhood centers and schools collaborate with teachers, administrators, families and clinicians to employ sound behavioral health service integration that leads to academic success and is essential to support a child's overall health and well-being.

To recognize Children's Mental Health Awareness Week, over 100 Baltimore City schools have signed up as Children's Mental Health Matters! School Champions Learn more about how you can get involved with Children's Mental Health Week.
