As the year progresses, AAI has made some very important additions to the home office staff! We are extremely pleased to announce the hiring of Beth Smith and Amanda Petty-Holmes here in the Des Moines office. Each is a welcome and needed addition to the AAI family. As you visit us, make sure that you welcome them! Please read each of their respected bios below to learn more about our new team members.

Amanda's first day was on May 2. She will be the new voice on the phone as our Administrative Assistant.  Amanda has over 5 years of experience as an Administrative Coordinator and Administrative Supervisor at DuPont Pioneer and has additional administrative experience at DaVita, Inc., prior to that. She and her husband have lived in several locations around the world for 10 years, including England, Guam, and Portugal while her husband was in the Active Duty Air Force.  Amanda and her husband enjoy time at their cabin near Rathbun Lake and are Harley motorcycle enthusiasts and organizers of the "Southern Iowa Wounded Veterans Rally" each year.

Beth started on March 1 as the Executive Assistant to the CEO.  She previously worked at Pioneer for nearly 30 years in various accounting and executive level administrative roles, before filling this new role to the Chief Executive Officer of AAI.  In addition to the CEO, Beth will support the Boards of Directors and other Leadership of AAI.  During her free time, Beth is very involved with horses and provides training and riding instruction on her acreage.  She also supports the Animal Rescue League of Iowa by fostering horses for them, providing training and structure to horses who have been neglected and abused, until they are adopted.  Beth and her family live near Elkhart.

Bird Flu Found in Missouri Turkey Farm
by: Iowa Public Radio
An outbreak of a bird flu has hit southwestern Missouri. While less contagious than the strain of avian flu that devastated the Midwest chicken and turkey industry last spring, the infection is still potent enough to call for the destruction of birds.

On Wednesday, when the outbreak was confirmed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture, the commercial turkey farm in Jaspar County, near Joplin, was still quarantined. Some 39,000 birds were destroyed last week as a precaution.

The Missouri outbreak is low pathogenic H5N1 avian flu, which has a very low (or no) mortality rate, said Kyoung-Jin Yoon, a professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. It was discovered by a U.S. Department of Agriculture surveillance program, he said.

Soil Health Benefits From Sustainable Crop Production

The benefits of healthy soil in sustaining crop production are most evident when growing conditions are less than ideal.

Healthy soils increase the capacity of crops to withstand weather variability, including short-term extreme precipitation events and intra-seasonal drought. Increasingly highly variable weather conditions present increased risks to crops and require more careful attention to conservation planning to mitigate impacts on soil health and crop productivity.

Soil health is defined by the level to which it is able to continually provide multiple functions to sustain plants, animals and humans' lives.

Iowa City Rejects Proposed Pork Plant

In a stunning turn of events, the City Council in Mason City rejected Prestage Foods of Iowa's proposal to build a $240 million pork processing plant. The Globe Gazette reports that the vote was a 3-3 tie, which represents a lack of a majority vote.

The company planned to hire more than 1,700 workers over the next four years but it met with protests from citizens concerned about environmental and quality of life issues.
