Port employees map out engineering careers at 
STEM Career Awareness Day

The Port was proud to support the 5th annual East Bay STEM Career Awareness Day organized by Cal State University East Bay's Institute for STEM Education. 250 high school students from Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville and Richmond had an inside look at local science, technology, engineering and math careers at innovative Bay Area companies. Port Assistant Engineer Parm Sandhu and Port Human Resources Supervisor Michael Mitchell participated in the working lunch, shared career pathways information and helped the students map out a career in engineering.

      

Port and volunteers celebrate Earth Day at 
the Port's Middle Harbor Shoreline Park

The Port and volunteers celebrated Earth Day with a Beach Cleanup at the Port's Middle Harbor Shoreline Park in Oakland. Volunteers helped to remove invasive plants and cleanup debris on the shoreline making the environment better for wildlife. Volunteers collected seven cubic yards of trash. Special thanks to community  members, Weiss Associates, HNTB Corporation, Women in Transportation Seminar, Cal State University East Bay - Freshman Day of Service and Girls Inc. for your volunteer service and dedication!

      

Port sponsors inaugural Oakland Aviation Day

15 middle school youths from the East Bay participated in a day-long Oakland Aviation Day camp. A partnership of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employee associations and local aviation organizations sponsored this inaugural "ACE Academy Oakland" event. The students visited the Oakland International Airport, Southwest Airlines, Aviation Institute of Maintenance, FAA Tower and Oakland Aviation Museum and learned from professionals about careers in aviation.
  
     
Techbridge West Oakland Middle School students learn about
Port's Clean Water Program and design water filters

Port employees enjoyed inspiring Techbridge girls from West Oakland Middle School to discover a passion for technology, science and engineering. The Port's Director of Social Responsibility Amy Tharpe welcomed the students and gave an overview of the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers at the Port. Port Associate Environmental Scientist Colleen Liang spoke to the future innovators about the Port's Clean Water Program and led a water filter activity. Port Principal Engineer Imee Osantowski, Training and Development Specialist Janet Jackson and Port Senior Programming Analyst Renu Bhatia guided the students through the water filer design, prototype, and testing process before their tour of the seaport. 
     
Port honors Prescott-Joseph Center's Deputy Director Portia Sumner

The Port honored Prescott-Joseph Center's Deputy Director Portia Sumner for her work to support community enhancement in West Oakland at the Girls Inc. of Alameda County's annual luncheon. Girls Inc. recognized Strong, Smart & Bold women who make a difference in the lives of young girls and our community. The Port team and guests from West Oakland community organizations are pictured above.
