The Fisherman Magazine Celebrates 50th Anniversary Issue

While working full-time in a Long Island print shop back in 1966, angler Richard Reina began putting together a weekly fishing newsletter in his basement, something he called The Long Island Saltwater Fisherman.  As with any side venture - particularly a new start-up - it took long hours to get his new publication off the ground.

While not running the print facility, Reina was busy collecting and writing fishing reports, selling ad space, distributing magazines throughout the region, and doing whatever had to be done to achieve success.   By the early 70's, the Long Island Fisherman began showing signs of success, with the New Jersey edition launched in 1973, followed by the New England version in 1974.

Longtime publisher Mike Caruso purchased the iconic brand from the Reina family two years ago, and has since incorporated bold changes to The Fisherman Magazine to meet the market challenges.  In fact, the May edition may look bigger and bolder than it has in recent years; it's not only that this one is a special collector's edition, but the longtime source for local recreational fishing news is also experiencing new life through increased social media awareness and improved print quality aimed at attracting new readers, while keeping longtime subscribers engaged.

As part of The Fisherman's golden anniversary celebration, the staff has gone back into the archives to share special moments and reminisces on some extraordinary people and events over the past five decades.

National Geographic Series to feature MTA/NJ Member Boatyard

Capitalizing on America's fascination with how stuff is made, National Geographic will profile Yank Marine's boatyard in a new reality-TV series set this Spring.

Manufacturing has shrunk or disappeared across much of the country, including South Jersey, once home to such disparate industries as glass-making, garments and machine shops. But boat-building remains a thriving part of the state's economy and heritage.
