Happy May! The weather is warm, trees and flowers are blooming and it is a great time to be in Minnesota.

It's also a busy time to be a dance family! This month we have a preschool performance and picture day, AND we are getting ready for our show June 11. Please make sure your dancer is practicing at home. Everyone should be getting music e-mailed and videos as they are made, to help with preparing for the show.

Parents, remember to be supportive and positive as your dancer prepares for the show. If there are parts of the dance they are struggling with, encourage them to ask their teacher for help. Practicing is the homework of dance class - just like if a child takes piano lessons - they must practice at home. Even just listening to the recital music is part of practicing. And beyond practicing, of course, we need everyone present in all classes. When a dancer is absent it does affect the whole class. We want everyone to be confident, secure and ready for the stage!

Happy Dancing!

Level II-V dancers CRUSH IT at the Cathedral Dance Festival!

Our level II-V dancers participated in the Cathedral Dance Festival on Saturday, April 16 at Grace Church in Eden Prairie. They joined about 500 dancers from 14 studios across the Twin Cities and Wisconsin and spent the day in master classes and seminars. Each class also had one of their dances from the Excellent Adventure adjudicated. We got great feedback from the judges! One in particular commented that they were really looking forward to whenever a Ballare piece was coming, because our dancers were so wonderful to watch, the choreography was appropriate for their age, and the costumes were unique. Comments were 'These dancers just get it' 'Keep it up - you're in a great place and have a great future in dance'. In the end, our level V tap class were chosen out of over 120 group dances to perform in the evening Gala! Dancers were so supportive of each other, it was a great day of dancing and community.

"From Head to Toe" Creative Movement Spring Recital May 13th!

Students that are registered for our Creative Movement classes  will have their Spring Recital on May 13, 2016 @ 6:00pm at Minnehaha Academy North Campus - 3100 West River Parkway, Minneapolis, 55406. Students please arrive at 5:30pm to be ready to perform at 6:00pm.

Classes will be creating dances around the story:

From Head to Toe

This performance is FREE! It is intended to be a low-key introduction to performing. There are no costume costs incurred by the students family for this performance. Ballare Teatro provides all costuming for this show.

*There are still classes after their performance!; Classes run until June 11th
Picture Day Sunday, May 15th 2016!
Picture Day will be Sunday, May 15th, 2016

Calabay Productions will be taking Ballare Teatro's picture again. Our pictures are somewhat unique-we do the best of both worlds; shots of camera.jpg each dancer dancing and a classroom posed photo.

Calabay Productions takes a different approach to dance studio photography. In addition to the posed photographs, we take photographs of the students actually dancing. Teachers and parents will love to see their child moving across the floor and enjoying the art of dance.

What to expect on The Big Day:

Photographs will be taken in two separate studios.
1.) Dancers start out in their recital costume. Creative dancers will get their picture taken in what they wear to class in both studios.
  • Once the entire class is ready, we will take individual portraits of each dancer.
  • Finally, after all the portraits are taken, students will take a group photo.
2.) After the recital costumes photographs, students will change into their dance clothes for action photographs.
  • Dancers visit the "action" studio to get their photograph taken as they move across the floor.
  • The schedule will allow about 10-15 minutes for the students to change and get ready for their action shots.
5.) After about 5-10 minutes, students can view their action shots, portraits and group shots on several kiosks. Discounts will be offered for ordering the day of the shoot.

If you are unable to make your class' picture day make sure to let your teacher know. We hope and expect to see everyone there!
No Classes Memorial Day Weekend

Ballare will be closed over Memorial Day Weekend, May 28-30 (Saturday-Monday). children-ballet-feet.jpg

Food First with Nutrition Julie
Want a quick, yummy, nutritious option for lunch or dinner? Of course you do! I love to create one bowl meals that are just that. Instead of making dinner a huge production, just toss together a few great ingredients, enjoy the taste and enjoy the energy you feel after eating it! A lot of this recipe can be done ahead of time and assembled later at work or after work. The roasted chick peas, by the way, are a great snack all on their own! But remember to leave enough for you salad later.....

Thai Quinoa Bowl with Crunch
Crunch:
Take 1 - 12 oz. can chickpeas (garbanzo beans) rinse, drain and blot with paper towel. Toss in a bowl with 2 T Olive Oil, salt to taste and spice how you like with curry, onion powder, cayenne, or other spices. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet and roast at 450 degrees for 30-40 minutes until crunchy and browned. This part can be done ahead of time and saved for snacks or crunch for any green leafy salad or this quinoa bowl. For this recipe I seasoned with Himalayan salt, onion powder and curry powder.

Salad:
1 cup cooked quinoa
4 cups mixed greens
½ cup cilantro
½ red bell pepper, seeded and chopped
2 carrots, shredded
½ red onion finely sliced
2 green onions, chopped
1 avocado, chopped

Dressing:
In small saucepan, combine and heat on low until melted
6 T coconut milk
2 T sesame oil
4 T peanut butter (no sugar added)
2 tsp Sriracha
1 tsp curry powder
2 garlic cloves
Himalayan salt and black pepper to taste

The quinoa, dressing and crunch can all be made ahead of time. Blend all salad ingredients and top with the dressing and chickpeas. Serves 2.
