MATT TABER/ I want You to want Me
You never desire the thing; you always desire the context or qualities surrounding the thing. When you actually obtain the thing, it's a failure of your projection of the thing. It's a little bit like Midas. You want it to be gold right up until the moment you want a hamburger.

Mnemosyne: An Exploration of Myth & Memory
Hatch Art presents an exhibition of myth-inspired paintings by Detroit artist Linden from May 1- May 2., The reception features music by St. Zita performing sublime melodies--pairing the strings of the somber viola with the plucks of the Chinese guzheng. The paintings celebrate an imagined return of old mythologies to modern cityscapes. "Mnemosyne" is named for the forgotten goddess of time and memory. These paintings celebrate the wonder of renewal, transformation, the endurance of mystery, and hellish challenges endured.

Opening Reception, Friday May 6, 6-9pm. [Hamtramck]

On view through May 29th.

'New Technologies and Victorian Society: Early British Photographs from the UMMA Collection' Guided Tour
The first half-century of British photography charts the journey of a new medium with distinct expressive and artistic potentials. Photography served as an aid to science and exploration but also captured aspects of British society in ways that are poetic and artistic. Some photographers demonstrated an interest in social reform while others revealed sentimental notions of the island's remote past. UMMA docents will introduce the trajectory of Victorian photography on display in this exhibition.

Birds of a Feather
A few years ago a group of artists - Suzanne Allen, Glenn Corey, Gwen Joy, Sabrina Nelson, and Gary van Gorp - got together to put on an exhibit at the Majestic Cafe in Detroit. They decided that the unifying theme of the show would be "Birds," and hence the title of the show, "Birds of a Feather." This year they are back together and include Laura Whitesides Host, Nancy Mosely and Joe Smith as part of the flock to show at Lawrence Street Gallery. One will see a variety of avian subjects: ornithological birds, fantasy birds, even English 'Birds.' It's an exhibition that will send you soaring
