Celebrate Spectacle Island with DCR Archaeologist, Ellen Berkland

45 Hull Shore Dr., Hull
Free, Donations Welcome

Celebrate Spectacle Island!  It has been ten years since Spectacle Island re-opened to the public, offering Boston area residents an urban escape just minutes away from the city. Once used as a seasonal hunting ground by Native Americans, Spectacle island later housed a quarantine station, a grease reclamation plant, and a horse rendering facility. For over 50 years, the city used the island as a place to dispose of garbage which even added 36 acres to the size of the island. So how did a place covered with trash become a sparkling emerald isle? Join Ellen Berkland, Archaeologist for the Department of Conservation and Recreation, as she recounts her experience of working on Spectacle island during its reclamation and restoration.

By popular demand, we are bringing back the much-loved opportunity to get together at the museum to talk boats. Or, in this case, ships.

Join Hull's own Adam Iverson, shipmaster, to hear about his extensive maritime experience in South Korea, where he has traveled since 1999. Come on a photo tour of South Korea's second-largest island where two of the world's largest shipyards are surrounded by a spectacular rocky coastline, picturesque fishing villages and forested hills laced with hiking trails.  The talk will focus on Korea's world-leading shipbuilding industry with plenty of photos of one of the world's largest shipyards in action.

Boston Light is easily one of New England's most recognizable landmarks. But, America's First Lighthouse is so much more than an icon. It's a technological marvel, with a massive 2nd order Fresnel Lens still shining brightly since its installation in 1859. It's a shining sentinel, offering hope to mariners at the treacherous entrance to Boston Harbor since 1716. And, it's an island home - for generations of Keepers and their families, who faced the joys and challenges of life on Little Brewster with courage and aplomb. Join us for a special look at our new exhibit, Shining Beacon, Island Home, celebrating the 300th anniversary of Boston Light.
