ChairsMessageChair's Message
Like most people, I was stunned and saddened by the death of Prince (Prince Rogers Nelson). (Remember that iconic guitar performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction?) Then, I remembered David Bowie died very recently as well.  And Merle Haggard. And Glenn Frey. And Lemmy. And George Martin. And Keith Emerson. And Paul Kantner. And then there are the actors and athletes. Google (verb) "celebrity deaths in 2016," and before you can finish "celebrity," the names pop up.  A lot of them.  Justice Antonin Scalia - very much a celebrity in his own right. Then there are all those people who you have never heard of but who, in the course of their lives, made great contributions to their families, their neighborhoods, their communities, or even humanity at large; those who may have acted heroically or nobly but did so "under the radar," known to no one but the people they directly affected. Their lives are cause for note and celebration as well.

I think, as people who take interest and are active in their community, LTA members generally work not for the pat-on-the-back (that often does not come), but for the sake of doing it, because it's a good thing to do. In most cases, performing community service is not "sexy" and does not result in great accolades or throngs of admirers. It typically is, indeed, under the radar. Sometimes it is interesting, sometimes not so much. Sometimes you can affect a large number of people; other times it is more on a "retail" level - working with a small handful of people to help them improve their lives in a small but impactful way. The scale, the impact and the visibility of community service will vary from activity to activity, but if done thoughtfully what should not vary is the fact that our community will be better off because of it. It is an important pursuit, and I hope we all will continue to carry that attitude.

On May 4, Leadership Tampa graduated its 45th class, the Class of 2016 (... best class ever) - another group of 49 individuals who we hope will continue to carry on the work of helping, even in some small way, to make our community better. If you know anyone from the new class, please reach out to them with a word of congratulations, and encourage them to continue their "leadership journey" by becoming active in LTA.

Seneca said, "Men do not care how nobly they live, but only how long, although it is within the reach of every man to live nobly, but within no man's power to live long." My maternal grandmother used to say, "Don't borrow trouble," meaning don't worry about things you cannot control. One thing we all have at least some control over is what we do in life to positively affect others. LTA is one good way to make a positive impact.

Best regards,

Reid

Tampa Chamber's Leadership 'Triple Crown'

By Kerry O'Reilly

In horseracing, when you win the Preakness, the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, it's called winning the Triple Crown. Our version at the Tampa Chamber is completing Emerge, Leadership Tampa and joining Leadership Tampa Alumni.

Jessica Murroff and Kareem J. Spratling can both claim rights to the "Triple Crown." Here are their thoughts on the experience and value of participating in all three programs.

Kareem J. Spratling Leadership Tampa '12
Jessica Murroff, Leadership Tampa'15
Of the three leadership programs, Emerge, LT and LTA, where do you think you grew most as a leader and why?

JM: Definitely Emerge. I was one of the founding members, so I was there from the start building this organization, recruiting membership, promoting the benefits and ensuring that we had the right infrastructure in place to succeed. I also served on the Chamber Board during this time and was able to continuously keep our efforts top of mind at that table too. I did a lot of growing as a leader during this time because we were just starting out and had so much to do!

KS: I have a bit of a weird path in that I completed LT before I joined Emerge. I probably grew the most in LT because you're paired with people who are such great leaders, and I learn best through experience. That said, Emerge was great in that it filled in some of the pieces that a young leader needs. I've recently been booted from Emerge due to age, and I plan to be an LTA member for life, so my goal and assumption is that one day I'll be answering this question and the clear answer will be LTA.

Do you believe you've benefited from completing all three programs and why?

JM: Yes, I have enjoyed all of them. The biggest benefits are the relationships I have gained from these experiences as well as how connected I am to our great region. They have all inspired and supported me in doing even more for our community.

KS: Yes. Emerge does a fantastic job of meeting the needs of young professionals, especially those who are excelling in their professions and often around older people. LT was great in helping to establish a broader understanding of Tampa Bay and making relationships outside of my professional circle. LTA fosters continued growth that might otherwise be stunted at the conclusion of LT.

Name one thing you would do differently if you could go back through the Emerge or LT programs.

JM: I don't think I'd change a thing!

KS: Emerge; join earlier. LT; what happens there, stays there.

Is there one person or experience that stands out for you from your time in all three programs?

JM: Serving on the Chamber Board as the first co-chair of Emerge and being able to continue my leadership on the board was an incredible experience. The one person who stands out the most: Deanne Roberts, no doubt. She inspires me daily.

KS: More of a philosophy than an experience. That philosophy is: Give generously of your time, participate and add substance without the thought of reward, and when you do that, you'd be surprised how often you are rewarded.

Any final thoughts you'd like to share?

JM: Get involved!!

KS: Yes. Leadership Tampa 2012 is the best class ever. ;-)

Editor's note: Best class ever claim not verified.
