Monroe Country Animal Control Award

Turning complaints into compliments is what Monroe County Animal Control staff and volunteers have accomplished. The shelter brought its save rate up to 56% in 2014 from 9% in 2013, accompanied by a 78% live release rate, earning it the 2014 Most Improved Open Admission Shelter award.

A reception was held last week to recognize the shelter performance and present the award. Several MPFA board members met with key Monroe County personnel who are responsible for the successful transformation, including Sergeant Greg Berman, head of Uniformed Services, Animal Control Division; Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone; Major Jeff Kemp, Uniformed Services; and Chief Deputy Heath Velliquette.

When Sheriff Malone was running for office, the number one complaint he heard was about Animal Control. Now it is one of the most complimented responsibilities under his authority and the community support is unwavering and outstanding.

Sergeant Berman stated that he feels he has the perfect job. He can use all the skills he developed in law enforcement in prior positions including testifying in court, enforcing laws, working with the community and combine it with his love for animals. There is no question he has a passion for those under his care and he is focused on continued improvement.

Monroe County Animal Control is working closely with rescue partners and attributes much of their success to those collaborations. Thank you to everyone involved in saving more lives in Monroe County!

Be a Hero for a Shelter!

Needed Immediately: Do you have a used residential washer and dryer you are willing to donate to wash pet bedding for a shelter? Please e-mail us [email protected] if you do. A charitable contribution receipt is available if requested.

$1,000 for Your Shelter

Maddie's Fund is giving $1,000 to every qualifying U.S. animal shelter that joins the Million Cat Challenge between April 29 and May 31, 2016.

If you're already in the Challenge, you can also earn $500 for each qualifying shelter you refer.

You can help the homeless dogs and cats of Detroit.

The Detroit City Council has approved Michigan Pet Fund Alliance as a donor for Detroit Animal Control & Care (DACC).

City regulations DO NOT allow individuals to donate directly to the shelter. So here is your chance: if you donate it to us, we will deliver it to DACC.
