President's Letter
The weather is heating up and so is the competition to bring new members into the association. May is designated as Membership Drive month for our local associations/chapters. The state office is offering great incentives to increase membership.
This month only, $50 of the state dues are waived for new members. Local chapters can provide the discount to the new members, keep the $50 for the local chapter or could choose to use the $50 for incentives to get more members. This opportunity allows us to grow the association and is the state's way to give back to our locals.
The state organization is providing weekly challenges to help get everyone started with their drives. Also, we will be posting updates on social media to chart progress and encourage "friendly" competition. At the end of the drive, we will have award opportunities for recruiters and new members too. Please make every effort to help us bring new people into our HBAM family.
We are continually looking at different ways to help streamline membership benefits and to help bring everyone together to make our organization even more successful. You are all the key to success.

"A Three Day Tour"
2016 HBAM State Convention & Educational Conference
Registration is now open for the 2016 State Convention at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi Mississippi.
The dates for the convention are June 23-25, 2016. You don't want to miss a minute of the fun that's being planned for this year's event. Registration pricing will include most of the activities.
The Price is $300 Builder Member and $150 per additional guest until Monday, May 23rd. The price will then increase again to our late registration pricing of $375 per member registration and $175 per guest.

Each month, HBAM will spotlight one member to feature in the newsletter. This month's recipient is Shane McLendon, owner of Home Remedies, LLC. Shane is a long time member of the Home Builder's Association of Jackson and currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer on their board. He is also an active member in HBAM/NAHB. Shane earned two exciting awards in 2016 and we are not even half-way through the year!
In January, McLendon was recognized as a Top 50 under 40 by the Mississippi Business Journal.
Top 50 Under 40 recognizes the state's 40 up-and-coming business leaders under the age of 40. The Top 50 Under 40 program seeks to identify and recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to Mississippi's overall economic progress, often working at their own local levels.
McLendon was also recognized as the National Home Builder's Association (NAHB) Remodeler's- May Remodeler of the Month. The NAHB Remodeler of the Month award program recognizes local, active remodelers who stand out among their peers. The award focuses on recent work, customer service, community involvement and dedication to improving the industry. Shane will be featured in a full-page profile in
Qualified Remodeler magazine.
Congratulations to Shane for these outstanding achievements! In addition to his involvement in HBAJ/HBAM, Shane maintains the Certified Professional Builder accreditation through the Mississippi Housing Institute. He also holds a Certified Aging in Place designation through NAHB. Shane is married, with two sons, and lives in Brandon.

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE - WEEK 1 CHALLENGE
Members, take a look at all your subcontractors, business partners, affiliates, etc. and make a list of those who are NOT a current HBA member. Each member is challenged to come up with at least 10 prospects and recruit them to a member.
Together, we can build a strong association by "Doing business with a Member".

Top Ten Code Violations
About 45% of residential field inspections result in a code violation. That's according to the Common Code Violations survey released in 2013 by the International Code Council (ICC) and the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB). Researchers polled code officials across the U.S. about the items most likely to be flagged during construction.

City-by-city look at home prices as signs of slowing growth appear
U.S. home prices rose 0.2% in February, according to a home-price gauge released in April. House prices rose 5.4% compared to a year ago in February, a slightly slower pace than in January, the S&P/Case Shiller 20-City index showed Tuesday. Analysts surveyed by Econoday had forecast a 5.5% gain. Click here to read more.
This Skills Gap Is Hurting America's Housing Market
While America's housing market is recovering, the construction industry has struggled to catch up. Nationwide, the median price for existing and new single-family homes for sale shot up more than 8% during the past year. The rise, in part, signals good news in that the housing market has continued to recover from the 2008 financial crisis, but prices are also being driven up by a growing shortage of homebuilders and home improvement professionals. Larger Remodeling Projects Trending Up in 2016 According to NAHB Survey
Whole house remodels and additions are regaining market share according to a survey of remodelers released by NAHB Remodelers, the remodeling arm of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Government Regulation in the Price of a New Home
New NAHB estimates based on the latest data show that, on average, regulations imposed by government at all levels account for
24.3 percent of the final price of a new single-family home built for sale.

Become a Certified Professional Builder
The purpose of the Certified Professional Builder Program is to establish criteria for home builders to assist in consumer awareness and professionalism through education, professional development and customer satisfaction.
Becoming a Mississippi Certified Professional Builder provides an opportunity for builders to pursue professional development through education and customer satisfaction. By agreeing to become a Certified Professional Builder, you will agree to meet standards beyond the licensing requirements of the Mississippi State Board of Contractors. Through the certification, builders will stay current on housing trends and the home buyer receives the benefits offered through the program.
