May is Preservation Month!

Historic preservation is, of course, something worth celebrating all year long! However, the special focus in May provides a chance to highlight successes and challenges, and invite those who may be new to the idea of preservation to participate in this important work.

For 2016, the National Trust for Historic Preservation is promoting a Preservation Month theme, "This Place Matters." Visit the NTHP website for details. For activities and opportunities happening here in California, please visit the Office of Historic Preservation's (OHP) California Preservation Month webpage. In this 50th year of the National Historic Preservation Act, there is much to celebrate!

May is also Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian Pacific Heritage Month. Learn about and celebrate the contributions of Jewish Americans and Asian Pacific Americans to American life and history.

SHRC and OHP at the CPF Conference

On April 18, 2016, the California Preservation Foundation (CPF) hosted the quarterly meeting of the State Historical Resources Commission (SHRC)
in conjunction with the CPF's Annual Conference, held this year at the Presidio of San Francisco.

SHRC Commissioners voted to forward eleven nominations to the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places for consideration for listing on the Register. Visit our Actions Taken webpage to see a list and descriptions of the nominated properties.

OHP staff also participated in the CPF conference. Staff from our Local Government Unit conducted a lively series of round table discussions on preservation topics of interest to local governments. OHP Registration Unit staff presented a workshop on the National Register nomination process and specifically how best to use the Multiple Property Submission for such nominations.

OHP Colleagues Receive Awards

We are proud to note that two of our colleagues, past and present, recently received some well deserved recognition.

On March 19, 2016, architectural historian Beth Edwards Harris, Ph.D., was among a group of Palm Springs preservationists   honored by UCLA Architecture and Urban Design for their efforts to preserve and promote the rich variety of modern architecture in the Palm Springs region. Dr . Harris serves as a commissioner on the State Historical Resources Commission and is Chair of the commission's Modernism Committee (which invites public participation - check out the  ModCom website ).

Eugene "Gene" Itogawa, former supervisor of the OHP Registration Unit, received a Preservation Award on April 24, 2016, from  Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation (APIAiHP). The award recognized his many endeavors to preserve California's Japanese American heritage. Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer Jenan Saunders had the pleasure of presenting the award to Mr. Itogawa at the APIAiHP Annual Conference in Stockton, California.

Congratulations to Beth and Gene, and much appreciation for your many good works on behalf of California's heritage!

Picture of Success:  Fifty Years of the National Historic Preservation Act in California

Our banner image for this month's ePost is the Cerrito Theater, El Cerrito, and is one of the stories in our "Picture of Success" campaign.

Starting in 2001, the Friends of the Cerrito Theater convinced the City of El Cerrito to purchase the long-closed 1937 theater. The building's Art Deco murals and other historic features were restored, mostly with redevelopment agency funding. Cerrito Theater once again shows first-run movies and has attracted other businesses to the area.  (text and photo contributed by David Weinstein, Friends of the Cerrito Theater

Do you have a preservation success? Share it as part of our Picture of Success campaign! Success stories and images are posted to our Facebook page weekly and some also are featured here in our ePost.
