Celebrating Relationships
Dear Beloved Community,
The month of May comes with celebrating relationships. First, on May 8th, we celebrate Mother's Day. Mother's Day is a great day to celebrate all women who nurture, love and inspire us to live positive and faithful lives. Make sure to tell your moms or the women who have been moms in your lives how much you appreciate them. As a special gift that day in worship, our Good News Gang will be leading worship with their musical. Unfortunately, I will not be able to be in worship with you on that day. The boys and I had planned a trip before the date for the musical was chosen. Yet, I know our children with the leadership of Debbie Malena Phillipsen will do a wonderful job of leading worship.
Second, May also brings life transitions for our graduates and their families. Many of our youth will be graduating which means giving thanks for where they have been in their school career and looking to move into a new future. Along those lines of life transitions, we have the honor and privilege to welcome some of our youth who have chosen to follow Christ and join the church on May 15 at our 9am service. I hope you will be present for our Confirmands who are making a decision that will be life changing as they claim the God who claims them.
Lastly but certainly not least, the last Sunday in May brings a wonderful speaker to the pulpit. On May 29th, Christine Tavares Mocha will be telling her faith story. That means a person who grew up in this church, who was confirmed in this church, who started her music career in this church, and who was married in this church will be telling us about her spiritual journey. You will not want to miss worship that day.
May is a month about relationships. It's about relationships with the women in our lives especially our mothers. It's about our relationship with our loved ones who will be leaving behind one academic career for new adventures with a new school or entering the working world. It is about our relationship with God as we welcome our Confirmands on the Day of Pentecost. It's about our relationship with each other and how we grow and support each other on this journey of life. In Ephesians 4:2-3 Paul wrote guiding us in our relationships, "Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."
Giving thanks for you beloved community,
Pastor Melissa

Summer Fun Fest!
|
Santa Clarita United Methodist Church's focus and mission is Rooting Families to Grow in Christ. We provide events and activities to support and nurture families of all kinds in building relationships with each other and with God. Building these relationships will strengthen individual lives, families, and our community as a whole.
As part of rooting families to grow in Christ, we are hosting a Summer Fun Fest to kick off summer. You are all invited to join us for Games, Grub and Good Times on June 5th at the Church. We will have a Bouncy House, Giant Jenga, Cornhole, Face Painting and many more carnival games and events! We are hosting this event so that families can spend time together, enjoy life together, and to celebrate the coming of a wonderful season together. The event is FREE, and all are welcome!
In order for our Summer Fun Fest to be successful, we are in need of volunteers. If you are interested in helping, please contact Melissa MacKinnon. Let's all work together to make this a successful event that our community will enjoy and remember for a lifetime!

Linda Miller Retiring
In 1969, Small World Preschool was opened by Director Audra Lebs and Assistant Director
Linda Miller as a ministry of Santa Clarita United Methodist Church. At that time Linda also wore the hat of classroom teacher. Their families cared for the facility and the playground for many years as a work of love. When Audra Lebs retired and moved away from Santa Clarita,
Linda took over as director and moved from the classroom into the office, but never losing her love for Small World and its families. This year in June,
Linda will retire after being a part of the Small World family for 47 years! To celebrate with her, the church will celebrate
Linda and Small World by recognizing her in the 9:00am service on June 12th, followed by a brunch that will be attended by past and present staff, board members, our congregation and Small World families. We hope many of you will attend so you can get a chance to personally thank
Linda Miller for all her years of devotion to the children and young families in our church and in our community.
Thank you, Linda. You are one SPECIAL lady!

Part 3: 50 Ways to Welcome New People
|
Help newcomers feel at home in worship.
21. Provide nametags for the whole congregation and develop the habit of wearing them. Form a "tag team" to organize and promote name tag use.
22. Review your church bulletin and other printed material to make sure information is not "insider oriented". Avoid church jargon and assuming that people understand the context.
23. Make sure your order of worship is easy for a visitor to follow. Include written or verbal explanations of what is going on and why. Print the words to all prayers, songs, and responses.
24. Sing at least one hymn each Sunday that is well known outside church, such as "Amazing Grace," "Joyful Joyful," or "Morning Has Broken."
25. Include a welcome to visitors in the open words before the service. Make sure the person speaking identifies him or herself. It is best for the pastor to issue this welcome.
26. Remember that visitors sometimes arrive a few minutes late. Don't front load all the information directed at them.
27. Place information about your church's ministries where a visitor can easily find it - preferable in the pew, or a clearly marked location near the entry points used by visitors. Don't expect them to go someplace else to find it.
28. Prepare Visitor Packets to be handed out by greeters with information about your church programs.
29. Give visitors with small children a small activity packet (with crayons, pipe cleaners, stickers, etc.) as they enter worship.
30. Avoid all talk about money with visitors.
31. Keep the discussion of "family business" to a minimum in the services. Limit announcements.
