Dear CIM Supporters,
Happy Bealtaine, the traditional Irish May Day festival! Bealtaine marks the beginning of summer in Ireland. While we are not quite feeling summer-like yet here in Minnesota, the Center for Irish Music is gearing up for a busy May and a very full summer of events, summer camps, and classes! Our executive director, Norah Rendell, will remain on maternity leave
until the end of May so please continue to direct questions to either Lorin, Erika, or Emily in the office.
This Thursday, 25 of our students, their families, and two CIM instructors will board a bus to Cincinnati for the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil (our regional Irish music competition). Please send them your best wishes and cheer from afar as they compete in solos, duets, trios, and in group competitions.
Registration is open for all of our summer camps, summer group classes, and Minnesota Irish Music Weekend programs. You can register online via our website for all group classes and camps. Please contact Lorin directly to schedule private lessons, as usual. MIM registration forms can be found at our website as well.
Our spring recitals are coming up in three weeks! Please invite your family and friends to these wonderful musical showcases. Our recitals are favorite events for staff and instructors - getting to see and hear the result of all of our students' hard work is so inspiring!
Finally, mark your calendars for June 10-12th for the
9th Annual Minnesota Irish Music Weekend
featuring a uniquely Irish-American line-up of Brian Conway (fiddle), Billy McComiskey (accordion), Brendan Dolan (flute & piano), the return of the amazing Joanie Madden (whistle & silver flute) and Sheila Shigley (song). In addition to the Great Session Experience and the Master concert, there will be workshops & lectures and excellent trad music programs for children, teens, and tweens throughout the weekend!

Irish music competition put on annually by the international Irish music organization called
Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. This year, the fleadh will be hosted by the Craobh Riley and the Riley School of Irish Music in Cincinnati, Ohio from May 6-8 at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherlands Plaza Hotel. Next year, 2017, the fleadh will be in St. Louis!
We have 25 students competing in solo, duo, trio, or group competitions this weekend. The Advanced Youth Ensemble has been working towards the under-18 grúpa ceoil and ceili band categories with their director, Brian Miller. All of our students have been diligently practicing their tunes and songs in preparation for this weekend's competitions. Please cheer them on from afar!

In addition to the competition, a major focus of the Midwest Fleadh Cheoil is the comaraderie and the enjoyment and satisfaction of setting (and achieving) musical goals. We strongly encourage students of any age to come each year! Keep up-to-date on students' results and see photos from the event on our Facebook page.
Musicians who place first or second in the Midwest competitions qualify to compete in Ireland at the All-Ireland Fleadh. The Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2016 will be held in Ennis from August 14-22. More information is on the fleadhcheoil.ie website. For the past 4 years, a small group of CIM students have decided to make the trip with their families.
