871st Gathering of the Presbytery of Baltimore

Renowned hymnist Dr. Mary Louise (Mel) Bringle - who
Dr. Mary Bringle
chaired the committee that created the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.'s new hymnal "Glory to God" - will be the guest speaker during worship service at the 871 st Gathering of the Presbytery of  Baltimore. The last Gathering before summer is just two weeks away! We'll come together once again as the Body of Christ from 9am to 3pm on Saturday, May 14 at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 622 Joppa Farm Road in Joppa.

This Gathering, entitled  Singing for a Change , is a continuation of the Presbytery's year-long focus on race, class and poverty.  We'll feature choirs performing songs from the new hymnal and members offering reflective readings about last year's city uprising as well as their revelations about the pursuit of justice and equity in matters of race, class and poverty in our communities. During the Stories and Celebrations segment of the Gathering, Dr. Bringle will present a message of liberation and justice incorporating music from "Glory to God" and film clips of various liberation and justice movements from this country and around the world.

Dr. Bringle is Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies and chair of the Humanities Division at Brevard College (Brevard, NC). A teacher at heart and a theologian by training (with a Ph.D. from Emory University and an assortment of publications in pastoral theology), she began writing hymn texts in 1999. Since that time, she has won a number of international hymn writing competitions and been featured as an "emerging text writer" by The Hymn Society in the US and Canada. She is currently serving as President of The Hymn Society and chair of the committee to create a new hymnal for the Presbyterian Church USA.

During Stories and Celebrations we'll welcome several new pastors to the Presbytery and acknowledge the retirements of Teaching Elders Carol Davis (May 1), former interim pastor of Springfield Presbyterian Church; David Harris (June 1), current interim pastor of First & Franklin Presbyterian Church); and, Richard Link, (June 30) who has served 16 years as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Bel Air. In the afternoon, we'll come together for Discernment and Decisions. We'll review the Presbytery's support of "An Appeal to Christian in the United States"; cast ballots for a Moderator, Vice-Moderator and Stated Clerk; review reports from various committees; and, hear an update from the General Presbyter Search Committee.

With such a full agenda, you'll want to join us for fellowship and a mid-day meal.  The gathering meal is only $9 and will feature an assortment of delectable sandwiches, salad and a dessert cookie from Bon Appetitˊ Caterers. Please note that sandwiches will be distributed on a first-come first-served basis on site to guests who have pre-paid online. Click here for the menu and to register for a Gathering Meal. The deadline for ordering a Gathering Meal is Friday, May 6, 2016. We look forward to seeing you at the 871st Gathering of the Presbytery of Baltimore.

Presbytery  .  .  . and the Wider Church

Something BIG is coming to Baltimore in four years:  The 224 PCUSA General Assembly!   The bi-annual assembly will bring thousands of Presbyterians to Baltimore and it is OUR job to be the "hosts with the most," providing hospitality, arranging transportation, gathering the hundreds of volunteers needed, offering side trips to local and regional attractions . . . you get the picture.

The GA offices provide plenty of resourcing and guidance and, as the time draws closer, staff support.  But it won't happen without US, the members of Baltimore Presbytery.  If YOU are interested or if you know someone you think might be good, especially those with great organizational skills and creative planners, please email your name and contact information to  Wanda Morgan.

The next "Order of the Day" will be held 4pm on Thursday, May 19, at Ryleigh's Oyster (22 Padonia Rd., Hunt Valley). Pastors, join your colleagues in ministry for a refreshing beverage and some good old fashioned fellowship. This is a great way to catch up with old friends, make new ones, and strengthen the ties that bind us together.
