5 Ideas to Keep Someone with Alzheimer's Happy

As a caregiver, your daily focus is on the health and welfare of a loved one. In so doing, a question that is asked frequently, "Are they happy?"

We found some sound advice from a caregiver in the Alzheimer's Reading Room. (The Alzheimer's Reading Room's mission is to educate and empower Alzheimer's caregivers, their families, and the entire Alzheimer's community.)

The Alzheimer's Reading room has some advice and real world ideas. They may seems simple, but the key for each of these is sharing time together.

Lead by Example

Calm begets calm. A study of Alzheimer's patients discovered that they mimic the emotions of the people around them. Those with Alzheimer's can pick up the emotional cues of their caregivers, whether it be anxiety or happiness, and will imitate those behaviors. The study found that as memory declines, emotional awareness is enhanced.

Further evidence that caregivers can set the tone for their loved ones. Learn more in this recap of the study:

Top 10 Signs of Alzheimer's

The Fischer Center for Alzheimer's research has put together this guide for understanding the top 10 Signs of whether it's Alzheimer's or behaviors of the normal aging process.

Everyone forgets a name or where they left something sometimes. But, the key difference between forgetfulness and memory problems is the impact on reasoning skills, disorientation, mood/behavior changes and difficulty performing tasks.

If It's Not One Thing, It's Your Mother

Ah, mom's advice. Her little pearls of wisdom seemed to make everything better because they were always filled with love. When we recited it back to our own kids, we really appreciated their healing qualities. Moms have a way of getting to the heart of the matter.

In honor of Mother's Day, we thought we would share with family caregivers some of mom's sound advice.

Think  good  thoughts.

Believe in  yourself .

Don't sweat  the small stuff.

This too shall pass.

  • Eating a teaspoon of sugar after having something spicy, can help neutralize the burning sensation.
  • A few slices of raw ginger root in boiling water may help soothe a cough or a sore throat
  • Make a paste with oatmeal and water and apply directly to irritated skin to soothe an outbreak of eczema.
  • Sea salt mixed with massage oil (making a consistency like wet sand, not runny) can be applied to rough skin as a natural exfoliator.
