May is Festival Month
Poulsbo kicks off the festival season
May 20-22 with
Viking Fest, a celebration of the town's Norwegian heritage. There's a street race, parade, doughnut-eating contest, carnival, stand-up paddle board race and much more small-town fun. On
May 21, Bremerton hosts the largest and longest-running
Armed Forces Day Parade in the nation. The event includes a Heroes' Barbecue for active-duty, reserve, retired and veteran service personnel.
 Celebrate Memorial Day weekend on the Bremerton Marina Boardwalk at the
Kitsap Harbor Festival. There will be historic ships visiting, pirates roaming the boardwalk and a Kid's Zone with STEM activities. Popular bands will play the main stage and there's a beer garden. Visit

Military & Veterans Memorials
The Kitsap Peninsula has a rich military heritage and that's reflected in dozens of memorials dedicated to honoring our veterans and remembering their sacrifices. You could easily spend a day or two touring the historic sites. Examples include the Kitsap County Veterans Memorial at Silverdale Waterfront Park, a flag pavilion and plaque honoring Kitsap Medal of Honor recipient John Druse "Bud" Hawk at Lent Landing in Bremerton, and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Bremerton's historic Ivy Green Cemetery. The monks of Gaden Shartse will create an intricate sand mandala at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art

Amateur and professional chefs will face off at the Port Orchard Waterfront Park
May 28 for the title of "Seagull" wing king (or queen). After the judging, the wings are for sale. It's all part of the fun at the 28th annual Seagull Calling Festival. The calling contest is at 1 p.m. and there's also a 5K and Kids Dash.
