Logan Boulevard Water Main Replacement Project starts soon
Project:   The Department of Water Management will soon be installing 7,147 feet of 8-inch water main  in W. Logan Boulevard (north service drive), from N. Albany Avenue to N. Francisco Avenue, in W. Logan Boulevard (north service drive), from N. California Avenue to N. Campbell Avenue, and in W. Logan Boulevard (south service drive), from N. Albany Avenue to N. Campbell Avenue. Parkways in certain areas will have to be dug up, as much of the main is located in this area.  Trees will be trimmed prior to commencement.

Reason:   The old main consists of 6-inch pipe, and they want to expand capacity. Further, the old pipe dates back to 1889 and needs to be replaced.

Timing:    They will begin installing the new water main in mid May, and expect the work to be completed in August. Restoration will follow. Dates may change depending on weather and other factors. If there is any appreciable change, they will notify you.

Traffic:  They will allow traffic to flow outside of their working hours.  When they are working in the street, they have to close it to traffic for reasons of safety. You will always be able to reach your home or business, even if it means putting a metal plate in place.  Outside of working hours, a lane will be left open for local traffic only.

Parking:  They will post their work area for "No Parking" as needed, during work hours (7am-4pm). They are agreeable to parking outside of those hours, but will have to insist that cars be moved by the start of the next workday. They will try to preserve as much parking as they can.

Alerts:  If you would like to receive regular email updates about the progress of the project, please go toBuildingANewChicago.org to register for the WaterALERT program. Simply enter your name, email address, and the project identification number at the top of this letter.  By signing up for the WaterALERT emails, you will be notified as the project enters each new construction phase - from mobilization of equipment onto the site, to the installation of new pipes, to the final restoration of the street.
Changes to Truck Parking Regulations
An ordinance was recently passed that allows city residents to park their lightweight (under 8,000 pounds), non-commercial pick-up trucks on residential and business streets without a special residential truck parking permit and also allows non-residents to park their pick-up trucks only on business streets. The change will become effective on May 18, 2016.

New truck parking regulations

1. If the non-commercial pick-up truck is owned by a City Resident and has a valid City Sticker, the owner may park the vehicle on a Residential or Business street.
2. If the non-commercial pick-up truck is owned by a Non-Chicago resident, (e.g. a visitor from the suburbs) and does not have a valid Chicago City Wheel Tax License, the owner may only park the vehicle on a Business street.

Commercial vehicles

The revised Ordinance ensures that "Commercial" and "Junk" vehicles are PROHIBITED from parking on Residential AND Business streets.  Please click here for more details on commercial vehicles.
Save the Chicago Reader! A Call to Action!

In this day and age, we all have seen major cutbacks in the world of print media. Every print publication has been affected, but let's be honest, the Chicago Reader is Chicago's favorite. For 45 years, before Facebook, Twitter, and hyper local websites, the Chicago Reader was providing local stories about City Hall, profiles of unique residents, and giving us the agenda for the weekend.

Staff at the Reader have launched a campaign to #savethechicagoreader by encouraging residents to sign this petition to show the publishers the kind of love that Chicago has for its only alternative free weekly.

Independent Bookstore Day! CELEBRATE!
Remember actual books and magazines? There was a time where they weren't digital and you had to enter a building to read them. While it's wonderful to be able to immediately get your books sent to your digital devices, there's also a great feeling when you have a book in your hand that you can touch and flip through. This weekend, let's remember that as we celebrate Independent Bookstore Day.

Bookstores are not just places where you can pick up your reading material, but they also serve as meeting centers in a community. Many provide events for children and author readings. We encourage you to check out our 32nd ward book stores!

Roscoe Books is located at 2142 W. Roscoe. Owners Erika and Jeff, moved into Roscoe Village the summer of 2013 and opened this quaint bookstore in 2014. Twice a week they host Story Time for kids to enjoy books out loud. Learn more about the store by going to roscoebooks.com.

Also located in the 32nd Ward is City Lit Books, right in the heart of Logan Square. City Lit Books' mission is to build a community around the written word, so it's no surprise that they host events that not only include book clubs, but also open mics and author events. Check out citylitbooks.com.

For this inaugural event, Lincoln Park Village has teamed up with Newberry Library to present John Huston, professional polar explorer and author of the award-winning book, Forward - The First American Unsupported Expedition to the North Pole who will talk about lessons learned from the North Pole. Street Sweeping Schedule

Please help by clearing off garbage, leaves, and landscaping debris from the curbs and sewers before the sweeper hits your street. Landscaped parkways need to be designed to keep landscaping debris out of the curbs and gutters.  Please make sure to move your vehicle on your designated street cleaning day so that the street can be thoroughly cleaned and so that you don't receive a parking ticket.
Kidical Mass
