Assalamu Alaikum

Dear Family & Friends of ICSC,

As April comes to an end, Ramadan is on the horizon and we will begin our spiritual preparations to welcome our holy month. Join us at the center this weekend as Religious Director, Asim Buyuksoy, centers us in a reflection about  al-Isra wa'l-Mi'raj (The Night Journey).

MPAC Media Awards
By Marwa Abdelghani

The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) was born out of the Islamic Center 25 years ago. On April 24th, MPAC held its 25th Annual Media Awards with over 600 people in attendance. Since 1991, MPAC has been honoring voices of courage and conscience in the film and television industry. This year, the organization honored four incredible voices that MPAC's President Salam Al-Marayati believes are "courageous, that cut against the grain and that are said with conviction."

George Takei, famous for playing Mr. Sulu in Star Trek, was among the honorees of the night. Takei has been a prominent voice in speaking out against bigotry and anti-Muslim rhetoric. The Daily Show 's Hassan Minhaj was another honoree who has used comedy and wit to shed light on the American Muslim community in today's unstable political climate. One of the documentaries MPAC honored was Salam Neighbor, a critical film that brought increasing amounts of attention to the humanitarian crisis in Syria. The cameras followed two filmmakers, Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci, who bring out the humanity of the Syrian people. The second documentary honored that night was Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy 's Oscar-winning film A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness , highlighting the number of horrifying honor killings that happen every year, as well as challenging the wrong view that Islam justifies such killings.

MPAC continues to engage with Hollywood in order to create a better narrative of Islam and Muslims on television and in film.
