Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

Hargrave celebrated the return of its Alumni this past weekend during Homecoming 2016. It was a great weekend to celebrate Hargrave.

Homecoming began off campus Friday morning at the Danville Golf and Country Club for the 2016 Alumni Golf Tournament. Rain did not dampen the spirits of the 40 participants willing to brave the weather. The rain eventually subsided and everyone enjoyed their time on the links.

2016 Hargrave Cadet Tattoo
2016 Hargrave Cadet Tattoo

The Hargrave Tattoo was held later in the evening. A Military Tattoo is an "Old Army" elaborate, high ceremonial retirement of our national flag, complete with patriotic music. Cadet Trey Barnes captured the entire Tattoo on video in one take. Check out the video and see for yourself--then come next year and see it in person!

Friday's rain was a blessing as it knocked down the Spring pollen and provided us with a gorgeous, cool Saturday. Saturday's alumni events ran all day, and many Cadets were able to interact with their forebearers and learn about the history of their Academy. Once on the parade field, they made everyone proud with a well executed parade.

The Cadets were exceptional throughout the Homecoming weekend. During Mess II, on Saturday, I stopped in the Mess Hall on the way to the Alumni Lunch and grabbed the microphone, I had two messages for the Cadets.

"Give me your attention (dead silence). You guys looked great today during the Parade. Well done!" (Visualize cheering Cadets at this point.)

"Now, where are all the members of Band Company? Show me your hands!" (A host of hands went up.)

"You guys sounded great last night at the Tattoo and really blew them away today! Great Job!" (Visualize more cheering Cadets now!)

Hargrave families are in for a treat on Mother's Day.

On the day prior to Homecoming 2016, Hargrave's 2015-2016 Postgraduate Basketball team was invited to the Virginia's Governor's mansion in recognition of their national prep title and season record. It was an extraordinary honor for a very special team. Read more about it at " Champion Hargrave team meets governor."

Major General Anthony Taguba (USA, Retired) arrives today as our Spring 2016 Distinguished Speaker! MG Taguba served the Nation for 34 years with honor and distinction. He is a man whose integrity and moral courage is worthy of emulation, and the Cadets will enjoy his message.

In 2004, MG Taguba was the Deputy Commanding General for Support, Coalition Forces Land Component Command(CFLCC)/Third U.S. Army in Kuwait. During this assignment he was responsible for providing support for the large buildup of combat forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was during this assignment that MG Taguba was assigned to be the investigating officer for the abuse of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.

MG Taguba will address the Corps of Cadets at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 28, 2016. Mom, Dad and family members are welcome to attend this event with your sons.

I'm very pleased to announce that our extensive search for LTC Walter Sullivan's replacement as our Academic Dean is complete. Dr. Hunter Powell will join Hargrave on June 15, 2016. The next Parent eNewsletter will feature a full update.

The Eye of the Tiger Competition will also be held this weekend. This competition tests individuals. At the "Warrior Breakfast" on Sunday morning, there will be some tired Cadets. There will be some happy Cadets and there will be some disappointed Cadets as well. But, there will also be some young men who have completed events they did not know believe possible.

Best regards,

Don Broome

Hargrave Parent Council

Mother_s Day 2015.
Mother's Day 2015.
If you haven't had the opportunity to attend Hargrave's Mother's Day festivities, we hope you will be able to join us this year. The boys are winding down with classes and will be welcoming parents and grandparents for a day of celebration. The Dress Parade is a special treat for all to see especially our graduating families. After practicing for a full year they finally get the chance to show off!

Come celebrate with the Hargrave family. Join the Cadets, Faculty, Staff and other Parents at the Mother's Day Breakfast Brunch, hosted by Parent Council, Sunday, May 8th from 8:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. in the English Lounge followed by Chapel service at 10 a.m. and the final dress parade at 11:00 a.m.

In recognition of Mother's day, Parent Council will be decorating the Chapel with beautiful spring flowers. If you would like to honor someone special to your family and son, let us know and her name will be included in the bulletin at the Chapel Service. You can do that "in honor of" those special people who are living or "in memory of" those who have passed away.

Send the following information to the Hargrave Military Academy, Business Office, Mother's day Service, 200 Military Drive, Chatham, VA 24531:

Your name and your cadet's name
Who you want to honor
Who you want to memorialize

A contribution in the amount of your choice (cash or check made payable to the Hargrave Parent Council), which must be received by the Hargrave business office on or before May 3rd in order to be included in the service bulletin.

Don't forget to bid on the Summer School Tuition Online Auction. You'll find the information under the 'Summer School' heading on the Hargrave website.

Thank you for your support in helping us to add to your sons' Hargrave experience.

Sincerely,

Brandon Bordelon Christened
Cadet launches namesake Ultra Light Intervention Vessel

Brandon Bordelon
Cadet Bordelon's future is family.
If you are a part of a shipbuilding family, don't be surprised if you eventually have a ship named after you. When Cadet Brandon Bordelon visited Bordelon Marine on Spring Break, he was taken to see the Brandon Bordelon, the newest and most advanced vessel of its type.

Cadet Bordelon's namesake ship is termed an Ultra Light Intervention Vessel, a ship used to support offshore oil exploration and recovery in the Gulf of Mexico. The vessel is 260' long and features: a 123x44' Clear Deck; a 60 Ton AHC Crane; a helideck; and an Internal ROV Control Room. Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) can be launched and recovered from the ship. ROVs are used for inspections or repairs of Gulf oil platforms.

During his visit with family, Cadet Bordelon christened the ship with a soft christening and took a tour of the vessel. He even had his photo taken in the captain's chair... in Cadet uniform! His goal is to gain acceptance to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and work toward a place in the family business. Cadet Bordelon is the son of Will Bordelon of Luling, Louisiana and Elizabeth Moriarty of Windermere, Florida.

You CAN make a difference!

IGTH

When it come to deciding on your gift to Hargrave, please know that those $10, $25, $50 and $100 gifts do add up and do help a tremendous amount!

Why Give?
The boarding school landscape has changed a lot over the past 10 plus years. There are more and more smaller academies that have been started which means it's a much more competitive market.

With that being said, IGTH allows Hargrave to hire and keep the best faculty, staff and coaches. Your support is needed more than ever!

Our goal is to raise participation in all constituencies within the Hargrave family, ultimately reaching 1,000 donors for the Academy's fiscal year ending May 31. That will be a 100% increase from the year before but less than our all time high of 1,600 donors. To make a gift you can go to the link below.
