Get Ready for Fit in 5!
Have you heard? Healthy Waltham is launching a 5-week wellness challenge beginning May 15 to encourage everyone to eat better and exercise more. You don't have to live in Waltham to participate. Registration is open! [Have you signed up yet? Click here.] By joining, you will get ideas on how to improve your eating habits and how to move more. You will also get advice from local doctors and nutritionists on ways to improve your overall health and wellness. Each time you report on your healthy activities, your name will be entered to win prizes donated by local vendors. The grand prize will be a healthy dinner for four prepared by Healthy Waltham's chef. It's not too late  to become a sponsor or donate a prize.  Contact us at [email protected].  This is the best time of year to think about your health.  Join Fit in 5 to have some fun and focus on your health this spring, while helping support the health of the Waltham community at the same time.

Hope you will participate!  - Pam Hess, Executive Director

A Big Thank You to Hannaford and Planet Aid
Healthy Waltham was recently selected as the recipient of charitable funds raised through the Planet Aid donation box at the Hannaford store at 55 Russell St. Planet Aid collects clothing and other items and supports charitable causes locally and around the world. The collection box at the Hannaford store is the most widely-used box in the area! We were very grateful to receive this support and learn more about Planet Aid.

Healthy Eating Workshop at Waltham Family School
Healthy Waltham recently concluded our healthy eating unit at the  Waltham Family School . Students learn about how to read ingredient labels, how to incorporate more vegetables and whole grains into meals, and how to cook with less sugar, salt and fat. The highlight of the class is the final potluck lunch where everyone brings in a dish to share and describes how they made it healthier. Check out more highlights here.

"Fresh! Chef-to-School" Featured Vegetable: Kale
Healthy Waltham's partnership with the Waltham Public Schools continues to build enthusiasm for new healthy foods in school cafeterias! Healthy Waltham's Chef Reva is back visiting all elementary schools with new recipes for kids to try. Students around Waltham are enjoying the latest culinary adventure: kale smoothies and kale-citrus salad. See our photo gallery here! For more background on this program, see our Waltham News Tribune article published earlier this year.

Cooking with GWArc
Chef Reva's monthly cooking classes at GWArc continued this month with a savory, Mediterranean-inspired meal: chicken and vegetable kabobs, challah, and Israeli cabbage salad. Students of all abilities are excited to try new foods and experience the satisfaction that comes with learning new cooking skills and sharing a meal. Check out our recipes here.
School Wellness Nights
Healthy Waltham's tables at Plympton Elementary School and Kennedy Middle School were a huge success. Students enjoyed learning about healthier food options and were shocked to see how much sugar their favorite beverages contained. A special thank you to H ealthy Waltham's sponsor for this event, RTN Federal Credit Union. Check out our photo gallery here. RTN also sponsored our table at Kennedy Middle School's first ever Health and Wellness Day! We love to see the interest in these health and wellness events in our community!
