Why Do They Do What They Do?

Caring for a loved one with dementia is often challenging. Every day, caregivers anticipate needs and plan ahead. Then from left field a loved does something that is out of ordinary, requiring the caregiver to adjust and reassess. It can be difficult to understand reactions or behaviors of those with Alzheimer's or dementia. It would be so much easier if there was an instruction manual for caregiving.

While a manual is not available, we did find this comprehensive article that provides insight into understanding dementia behaviors and some suggestions for how to cope. You are encouraged to scroll down the many sections to learn about various issues such as dealing with troubling behaviors, addressing paranoia and handling sleeplessness and sundowning.

Technology for the Caregiver

Our friends at Southern Caregiver Resource Center have developed a very helpful article about using technology to assist with caregiving. Devices, online sites and apps can manage your information and provide reminders.

With increased reliance on our digital devices, now you can incorporate their capabilities into your caregiving routines. Click on the link below to see this overview article.

The Alzheimer's Association has prepared a list of apps that can be downloaded to a phone or tablet to help manage care for your loved one. In addition to medication reminders and ways to manage information, they also provide apps that can help with relaxation or activities. Costs for each app varies.

Laugh a Little...

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Plan to be spontaneous, tomorrow.

Shin: a device for finding furniture in the dark.

Conjunctivitis.com: that's a site for sore eyes.

The truth is out there. Anybody got the URL?

I keep hitting the escape key but I'm still here.
