ACEC National Convention - Congressional Visits

In April, ACEC/Michigan leaders traveled to Washington D.C. - in conjunction with the ACEC National Convention - to meet with our Michigan Congressional Delegation. Members met with nearly all of the Michigan elected officials to discuss key issues for the engineering industry including infrastructure funding, FLSA regulatory overreach, and an energy plan for America's future.

ASCE Michigan Section Celebrates Centennial Anniversary
|
ASCE Michigan Section celebrated the 100th anniversary of its inception with a gala reception and dinner on May 12, 2016 at COBO Center in Detroit.

 MDOT Director Kirk T. Steudle, PE, presented a Certificate of Tribute from the Governor's office honoring the Michigan Section's anniversary to Therese Kline, PE, current ASCE Michigan Section President. Director Steudle also addressed the participants about the great work ASCE has done over the years to promote civil engineering, develop leaders in the industry, and to highlight the condition of our infrastructure through the Report Card.
 Randall S. Over, PE, the 2014 ASCE National President, also attended the Centennial Celebration and shared with the audience the future goals and mission of ASCE. Mr. Over applauded Michigan for being one of the largest and most active sections for many years.

| 2016 Michigan Infrastructure Conference
Held May 13 at COBO Center, Detroit
More than 200 attended the 2016 conference, jointly hosted by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Michigan, the Michigan Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Urban Land Institute (ULI), which focused on new technology and innovative methods to improving Michigan's infrastructure.

Keynote speakers included Kirk Steudle, PE, Director of the Michigan Department of Transportation, and Maurice Cox, Planning Director for the City of Detroit. Attendees also enjoyed a panel discussion of infrastructure experts including Sue McCormick, CEO of GLWA; Michael Ford, CEO of RTA; and Polencia Mobley, Chief Engineer for DWSD. The panel was moderated by Jennette Smith, Editor of Crain's Detroit Business. Six unique educational breakout sessions on various topics also took place. Exhibit booths provided information and networking opportunities and Continuing Education credits were provided for licensed professional engineers.

ACEC and ASCE Present Awards

During the Michigan Infrastructure Conference on May 13, several individual and project awards were presented.
ACEC recognized Mark Kramer (SME) for his leadership and dedication as the 2015-2016 president. Josh Dudicz (Williams & Works) was recognized for his service as Chair of the Transportation Committee.
ACEC honored Theresa Petko (AECOM) and Thomas Deneau (Wightman) for their leadership on the ACEC/Michigan Board of Directors. Walter Alix (Retired - Hubbell, Roth and Clark) was honored for his service as the ACEC/Michigan National Director.

Michigan Students Successful in Applying for ACEC National Scholarships
|
|
After winning the top ACEC/Michigan scholarships in February, two Michigan engineering/surveying students went on to compete for the 5 available ACEC National scholarships. Both applicants were successful and received National scholarships to help cover the costs of their education.
Lauren Grimley received the $2,500 a/e ProNet Engineering Scholarship. Grimley will earn her bachelor's degree in civil/environmental engineering from Calvin College in Grand Rapids this year and will enter a master's degree program in water resources and environmental engineering at the University of Iowa in the fall.
Aryn Cowley received the $2,000 Small Firm Council Scholarship. She will graduate this spring from Ferris State University with a bachelor's degree in surveying/engineering and will continue her education in the fall in the master's degree program at Purdue University with a focus on geomatics. Aryn attended the 2016 Michigan Infrastructure Conference where she was presented with her scholarship award.

| 6th Annual Construction Science Expo  On May 17, 2016, the design and construction industry again came together to introduce Detroit middle and high school students to a career in engineering and construction. This year's event was held at the Michigan Science Center in Detroit. Over 800 students, who signed a pledge to be drug-free, were treated to a full day of hands-on exhibits designed to allow the students the opportunity to experience first-hand what it is like to operate an excavator, participate in a skilled trade, or be an engineer and design a bridge or highway.

| DEQ Michigan Environmental Compliance Conference

The Michigan Environmental Compliance Conference (MECC) is the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's (DEQ's) premier compliance assistance event designed to help businesses, institutions, municipalities, and environmental professionals understand and comply with their environmental requirements. The MECC, which is hosted by the DEQ bi-annually, has educated thousands of manufacturers and environmental professionals throughout the state on basic and technical environmental topics since 2000.
The DEQ has received numerous suggestions and requests to expand the conference, making it more comprehensive and to address the needs of businesses with varying levels of environmental regulatory knowledge. In response, some big changes are being made to this year's event.
